Will the widespread adoption of prompt engineering commoditize project management skills, or can it help PMs differentiate themselves and command higher value?

Hi PMI Community! I’m Sarah Philbrick, and I work as a Product Manager at PMI with a focus on our learning offerings. As we go on this skill-building journey together, I’m excited to engage in meaningful conversations, explore trending topics, and learn from each other.
Reflecting on one such topic, GenAI and prompt engineering, I am interested to hear your perspective on commoditization vs. differentiation.
Will the widespread adoption of prompt engineering commoditize project management skills, or can it help PMs differentiate themselves and command higher value?
AI can automate repetitive tasks such as scheduling meetings, updating project timelines, and generating reports. By streamlining these processes, project managers can focus more on strategic decision-making and creative problem-solving, thereby increasing productivity and reducing operational overhead. Experienced project managers who combine technical knowledge and strategic thinking could be continue to command higher value. Saving Changes...
In my opinion, as we start actively using AI, it is essential for any Project Manager to have the ability to interact with machines and reap the numerous benefits. Firstly, it is easier to delegate tasks to AI for creating documents and then review them, rather than doing everything manually. Secondly, AI can gather information and conduct small-scale research, which is very useful when developing a strategy or gathering requirements. For those who are just starting their career in Project Management, AI can assist with learning and adapting to the job. Saving Changes...
AI can help Project Managers in terms of performance and productivity if PMs know what prompts should be given for which problem.... this way AI needs human touch to get / extract the exact or the best suitable solution....
So knowing about prompts are important and thanks to PMI for this initiative... Saving Changes...

Prompt engineering is coming to support us, but never to do our job. I think this is the right way to use this tool. Saving Changes...
From the 3 domains of cognitive learning theory: Learning analysis, and Actions AI (Generative Language Models) is my ideal helper in the first two domains, but PMs are responsible for actions and real delivery values because without them, ideas will remain dreams and not goals that are achieved.
That's it today, we'll see what happens tomorrow Saving Changes...
I think it may affect the field of Project Management in various ways. Repetitive and data-intensive tasks can likely be streamlined, which will push more administrative aspects of PM into the background, as such skills become easily accessible. On the other hand, it can also be seen as a tool that PMs can and should use to enhance their work. By automating routine tasks, PMs can focus more on strategic planning, leadership, risk management etc, means higher-value activities that require human insight and creativity. This human aspect could come even more to the forefront and represent the future added value of the (human) PM. Saving Changes...

Gen AI is revolutionizing project management by significantly reducing the time required to complete tasks that would have otherwise taken several hours. I have been actively managing a three-hospital project since 2019. I began using Gen AI as my assistant earlier this year, and it has greatly enhanced my efficiency, communication, and the quality of my decision-making. I am confident that by the end of the "Prompt Engineering for PMs" course, my skills will be honed to tackle all tasks head-on. The future is bright and exciting. While AI cannot replace a project manager, a project manager who leverages AI will undoubtedly outperform one who does not. Saving Changes...

Generative AI, like all other software tools, are here to support HI (human intelligence). While it can and will streamline processes and increase overall productivity, PMs can continue to deliver unique insights and solutions that are enhanced by AI. No two minds think alike so from that end, PMs who are flexible, adaptable and committed to building & improving creative and critical thinking skills will always be ahead of the game.
