Will the widespread adoption of prompt engineering commoditize project management skills, or can it help PMs differentiate themselves and command higher value?

Hi PMI Community! I’m Sarah Philbrick, and I work as a Product Manager at PMI with a focus on our learning offerings. As we go on this skill-building journey together, I’m excited to engage in meaningful conversations, explore trending topics, and learn from each other.
Reflecting on one such topic, GenAI and prompt engineering, I am interested to hear your perspective on commoditization vs. differentiation.
Will the widespread adoption of prompt engineering commoditize project management skills, or can it help PMs differentiate themselves and command higher value?
The primary application of Generative AI (GenAI) in project management, particularly through Large Language Models (LLMs), requires structured, well-defined prompts and continuous interaction for refinement to yield optimal results.
The initial challenge, therefore, is crafting prompts capable of generating valuable insights for specific project tools and techniques. The subsequent challenge involves verifying the output's accuracy, ensuring the LLM has not hallucinated or provided incorrect assessments.
As prompt engineering doesn't guarantee perfect results without PM interaction and confirmation, I assert that GenAI will not commoditize project management skills. On the contrary, PMs can differentiate themselves and gain even greater value, as GenAI increases productivity, efficiency, and the chance of achieving all project objectives.
AI may be perceived as being widely adopted, but I disagree. Many companies are reluctant to use AI. Early adopters need to educate and demonstrate AI's benefits. Before PMs can command higher value, they need to show how leveraging prompt engineering combined with years of experience, human oversight, and critical thinking results in better in outcomes. The adoption of prompt engineering will give value in project management to those who have a good capacity to adapt in this disruptive world.
I agree and to add a point that GenAI adoption streamlines the process of creativity, actions, visibility and helps in building more accurate data. Saving Changes...
Gen AI has come to stay as it is becoming more popular in adoption and disrupts the project management landscape. PMs can use it to enhance efficiency in routine activities while focusing on activities that require strategic thinking and emotional intelligence. Saving Changes...

good question Sarah, while GenAI and prompt engineering, in my opinion, won't completely replace project managers, they will draw attention to the distinction between those who lead with insight and those who merely follow procedures. Indeed, we can provide value and stand out more if we learn to use these technologies wisely. The key is how we use them. Saving Changes...
Prompt engineering will surely bring a value in project management for the condition that it stays well used by PMs Saving Changes...

I recently did some research on a global educational topic, and at first I was amazed by everything an AI was telling me, but in the end it turned out that a lot of this information was hallucinations, so I had to start the research over but asking for sources and corroborating each one it gave me, even some sources no longer existed so that text was of no use to me, now, what this tool did was give me many clues on how to search or deepen my research and with another AI I managed to find sources since I had a way to ask it the precise question. Conclusion, AIs are fabulous but you have to know how to use them and not just copy and paste. Saving Changes...
The widespread adoption of prompt engineering won't turn project management skills into commodities; instead, it can enhance them. By mastering effective prompt use, project managers can optimize planning, risk analysis, and communication, making them more efficient and strategic. This allows them to focus on critical decision-making and leadership, setting themselves apart. Those who smartly integrate generative AI will not only increase their value but also lead digital transformation in their organizations. The key is to adapt and use technology as a competitive advantage. Saving Changes...
