Hi PMI Community! I’m Sarah Philbrick, and I work as a Product Manager at PMI with a focus on our learning offerings. As we go on this skill-building journey together, I’m excited to engage in meaningful conversations, explore trending topics, and learn from each other.

Reflecting on one such topic, GenAI and prompt engineering, I am interested to hear your perspective on commoditization vs. differentiation.

Will the widespread adoption of prompt engineering commoditize project management skills, or can it help PMs differentiate themselves and command higher value?

I agree with the question and the various answers presented. AI tools are definitely helpful, but are that: helpful tools. The human-in-the-middle approach to valiate the data and proposals, is quite important. And value of the PM value is linked to that.
It's very similar to the value of having a certification: it helps, but the value is added by the usage of knowledge.

The widespread adoption of prompt engineering will not commoditize project management; instead, it will become a strategic differentiator. As AI becomes embedded in daily operations, project managers who master prompt engineering will gain a distinct advantage transforming AI from a passive tool into a dynamic collaborator.

By leveraging well-crafted prompts, PMs can accelerate decision making, streamline communication, and surface insights that drive proactive risk management. This positions them not just as coordinators, but as value creators in complex, fast-paced environments.

Rather than diminishing the role of the PM, prompt engineering amplifies core leadership competencies critical thinking, stakeholder alignment, and adaptability elevating their strategic relevance and market value.

I believe any technology including GenAI is good for our day to day professional and personal use however user should know the knowledge and boundary to use it. Accurate prompt will result providing relevant response and save our time. Specifically in project management field where substantial share of work is unique and project specific, project manager should use this tool with great care and mindful way to get efficient result. I believe adequate training and real time use will help us to maximize the efficiency and GenAI will be a key tool in our project management work soon.
Prompt engineering and artificial intelligence, in my opinion, will automate the repetitive aspects of project management without diminishing its value. Human abilities and astute analysis will be distinctive. By using these tools, a savvy project manager can save time and concentrate on making decisions, solving problems, and providing genuine value to the team and clients.

The use of Generative AI in PM field will help differentiate individuals and programs and add value as they complete projects. The human interaction with projects is still a necessary skill set. This will make people more efficient.

While prompt engineering may simplify certain aspects of project management, skilled project managers who integrate technical knowledge, interpersonal skills, and strategic thinking will continue to command higher value.

Still, prompt engineering requires a "human touch" that considers factors beyond the hard data, that makes a difference
