Hi PMI Community! I’m Sarah Philbrick, and I work as a Product Manager at PMI with a focus on our learning offerings. As we go on this skill-building journey together, I’m excited to engage in meaningful conversations, explore trending topics, and learn from each other.
Reflecting on one such topic, GenAI and prompt engineering, I am interested to hear your perspective on commoditization vs. differentiation.
Will the widespread adoption of prompt engineering commoditize project management skills, or can it help PMs differentiate themselves and command higher value?
Prompt engineering would be helpful in having higher command over PM skills because by leveraging AI tools in project management, many time consuming tasks including data analytics, team collaboration, stakeholders engagement, planning and risk assessments would be carried with the assistance of AI.
Moreover, its not worth considering that Prompt engg would commoditize and replace PMs as AI is not alternative to PMs talent triangle of power skills, ways of working and business acumen. Every project has its own SMART goals and complexities which PMs can handle through the skills attained by experience. Prompt engineering can only assist PMs in executing the project specific tasks effectively both in time and cost.
Gen AI and prompt engineering brings value to any component of PM as long as it is utilized with the utmost focus on integrity, specificity and lastly, authenticity. Saving Changes...

We have implemented AI within our company to learn on company data and knowledge. The productivity increase is nothing short of astounding. No longer pinging several colleagues to get answers then spending hours to develop presentations. Answers within seconds and reviews within minutes. I'm extremely bullish on AI for significant productivity increases! Saving Changes...

At this point GenAI is a powerful tool. The better GenAI can be utilized the more efficiently the project manager can accomplish the assigned tasks and projects. Significant projects encompass numerous skills; stakeholder management, team building, and risk recommendations, to name a few. Project management cannot be replaced by GenAI today. A project manager with solid GenAI skills can change his/her daily work activities. Saving Changes...
Project management, to be successful, demands a set of people's skills to address complexity. I think that, for the moment, Generative AI becomes a tool to improve the productivity of project managers. However, I hope that this technology will continue to surprise us in the coming years. greetings everyone, my name is Brian and I am an IT Officer. Although AI prompt is a valuable and useful tool, one of the things that makes a project manager effective is the ability to understand and manage people. Humans by default are complicated beings. The ability to understand and manage stakeholders will always be a core skill of a project manager. I believe AI will "force" us as project managers to focus on providing value more. With the advance of AI tools in project management, I wonder what might project manager role be looked alike in next 5-10 years? Working more on vision & strategic alignment with the organization rather than our traditional day to day activities? Clearly, AI will take over us if PMs don't adjust their wings. Saving Changes...
Prompt engineering can indeed commoditize certain aspects of project management by automating routine tasks and standardizing practices. However, it also offers PMs the opportunity to differentiate themselves by focusing on strategic leadership, leveraging data-driven insights, enhancing their soft skills, and continuously learning and adapting to new technologies. Those who can effectively integrate AI tools into their workflow will likely command higher value and remain crucial to project success. Saving Changes...
