Hi PMI Community! I’m Sarah Philbrick, and I work as a Product Manager at PMI with a focus on our learning offerings. As we go on this skill-building journey together, I’m excited to engage in meaningful conversations, explore trending topics, and learn from each other.

Reflecting on one such topic, GenAI and prompt engineering, I am interested to hear your perspective on commoditization vs. differentiation.

Will the widespread adoption of prompt engineering commoditize project management skills, or can it help PMs differentiate themselves and command higher value?

While prompt engineering may streamline certain aspects of project management, skilled project managers who combine technical knowledge, soft skills, and strategic thinking could be continue to command higher value.
Yes, it depends on how the tool is used. If a PM ignores the potential of prompt engineering, they may become replaceable. But if a PM integrates these tools, they can automate reporting, deliver insights, generate documentation, improve automation processes, and optimize workflows ultimately becoming a key figure in organizational transformation.

I see AI tools as valuable assistants to project managers. In this new era, PMs are expected to handle an increasing number of tasks as organizations strive for greater efficiency., we are being push even harder :-) The mantra is new longer 'work harder,' but 'work smarter.' As project managers, we're already accustomed to Learning and using tools to streamline and organise our work, we should treat AI as becoming another addition to our toolkit.

Alongside AI, we continue to rely on established project management software to plan, track, and deliver projects effectively, for example

Microsoft Project , Jira, confluence. Trello, Office (Excel, Lists, Access, SharePoint)
Smartsheet. Monday.com and many more..

With AI integrated into many of these platforms, project managers can automate routine tasks, gain insights from data, and focus more on decision-making and the soft skills like engaging with our stakeholders and team

'Sperate parati ' Go forward forward prepared.

Both. There will surely be some commoditization of PM skills over time, which I see overall as good for the community! We'll find our differentiation in how we USE the generated outputs to advance our projects and organizations.

I strongly believe that the advent of Gen AI will not outrightly replaced the informed Project Managers but rather empower them to function optimally. Just keep up the pace of the technological evolutions and as Project Managers, we will always be relevant and adding value to our respective domains.
Prompt Engineering is valuable given the great impacts it has on productivity and efficiency in the present project management space, as a result, there is potential possibility of it being commoditized overtime, if given adequate thoughts, by PMs. However, it can as well serve as a differentiating factor for early adaptors. That being said, the limiting factors such as ethics, governance, compliance issues shouldn't be overlooked due to its consequences.

PM's by nature or learning and adapting.. They differentiate themselves by knowing when and how to effectively use Gen AI

The rise of prompt engineering can be both a disruptor and a differentiator for project managers. While some routine tasks may become automated, those who adapt and integrate AI tools into their workflows will stand out. PMs who learn to write effective prompts and leverage AI for planning, risk assessment, reporting, or stakeholder communication can increase efficiency and deliver more strategic value. In this way, prompt engineering doesn't commoditize PM skills—it elevates them for those willing to innovate.

I think now it is more important than ever for Project Managers to work on their soft skills, because that is what it is going to differenciate the great from the good/average. Up until now, a PM could 'get away' with managing projects sitting behind a spreadsheet and a Power Point slide; not anymore. The data analysis, reporting, note taking, milestones tracking, regular commumication, and so on, can now be done by anyone using AI. Remember, AI does not 'think', it only works based on that is statistically most likely to be the most common response. So stay focused on the things AI cannot do: motivate people, show empathy, persuade somebody, really coonect with your project team, and think outside the box.

Hi Sarah, as a newly certified CAPM I found that utilizing AI technology helped me to work through project scenarios and understand the material in a clearer way. AI provided several real world scenarios with regards to budgeting using ITTOs and thinking through what a process would require. It can allow testing before time, resources and money are spent on models that may not yield the desired result because of the information available from relevant sources. Any how that is a newbie's two cents.

Prompt engineering either ways to be validated by Project/Product managers and hence once project managers have soft skills and technical expertise AI wont take away PM roles
