Hi PMI Community! I’m Sarah Philbrick, and I work as a Product Manager at PMI with a focus on our learning offerings. As we go on this skill-building journey together, I’m excited to engage in meaningful conversations, explore trending topics, and learn from each other.

Reflecting on one such topic, GenAI and prompt engineering, I am interested to hear your perspective on commoditization vs. differentiation.

Will the widespread adoption of prompt engineering commoditize project management skills, or can it help PMs differentiate themselves and command higher value?

Regarding prompt engineering, it can be a valuable complement to further optimize project workflows. Its use enhances key skills such as decision-making, risk identification, and the ability to better visualize opportunities—making it a highly effective tool for Project Managers.

This training is highly relevant to current technological advancements, particularly in addressing the challenges and opportunities of AI in project management. The discussion on prompt engineering and its impact on PM skill differentiation is engaging, especially with insights from experienced practitioners like Sarah Philbrick. However, it would be more beneficial if supplemented with concrete case studies or practical guides for immediate application. Overall, this is a great initiative to prepare PMs for the digital era, though there's still room for further development.

Hi Sarah, either GenAI or Prompt Engineering , there should be a clarity of generating the results and human perspective were one should draw a fine line. As a Product manager one tries to bring the customized answer what is expected.Utilising GenAI's and prompts to put your thoughts in a precised way always makes you differentiates and enhances the PM Skills.

Hi everyone! I'm currently working as an Operations Manager at 1950Labs, a LATAM software company focused on tech consulting and staffing.

With the rise of AI, we’re entering an era where technology can manage data, documentation, and processes more efficiently than ever. But it’s precisely in this context that our human presence becomes more meaningful. One-on-one conversations, active listening, and true connection with teams and clients will be the new superpowers of Project Managers. AI won’t replace what makes us human—it will make space for it to flourish.

As GenAI and prompt engineering become more widespread, parts of project management risk becoming commoditized. Particularly routine tasks like reporting, scheduling, and basic communication. However, this shift also opens powerful differentiation opportunities. Project managers who use GenAI strategically can elevate their roles by asking better questions, generating insights, and driving creative, adaptive planning. The true differentiator won’t be the tool itself, but how PMs think with it. Using AI as a force multiplier for strategic leadership, not just automation. Those who embrace this mindset can command higher value in an increasingly AI-fluent world.

what do you think about using the AI in the project management by a little experienced project managers?
I think, project managers' skills will not become entirely commoditized, but the nature of the value they provide will change.
Those who can effectively use agile engineering as an enhancement to their performance, rather than a replacement for their expertise, will stand out.

I believe it will be difficult for AI to take over the PM role in the foreseeable future, as the bulk of the heavy lifting in project management is people-focused. There is no doubt about the immense impact that AI has on improving and managing a PM’s processes and tasks. In fact, the level of efficiency and speed a PM can achieve is greatly enhanced by AI, and PMs who embrace AI will distinguish themselves. The PM role is already complex, but it will only become more important as technology advances.
Prompt engineering won’t replace project managers but enhances them. While AI handles routine tasks, great PMs lead, communicate, and make tough decisions. By learning to use prompts effectively, PMs can work smarter, not harder, and focus on what matters most. It’s a new edge, not a threat.
