Hi PMI Community! I’m Sarah Philbrick, and I work as a Product Manager at PMI with a focus on our learning offerings. As we go on this skill-building journey together, I’m excited to engage in meaningful conversations, explore trending topics, and learn from each other.

Reflecting on one such topic, GenAI and prompt engineering, I am interested to hear your perspective on commoditization vs. differentiation.

Will the widespread adoption of prompt engineering commoditize project management skills, or can it help PMs differentiate themselves and command higher value?

This is a good way for PMs to differentiate themselves and command higher value in the PM industry.

The impact of prompt engineering on project management skills will depend on how PMs integrate it into their toolkit. Embracing it as a complementary skill can help PMs differentiate themselves and add greater value to their roles.

From experience, being a project manager is not just having the project management skills but more importantly having the experience in applying those skills, resolving any issues and making decisions are several key differentiators between a seasoned project manager and a project manager who only rely on AI. In addition, as a project is unique, we need to actively evolve our skills to respond to the unique needs of the project.

Having said that we cannot be considered a true project manager if we do not embrace techniques that ultimately can save significant amount of time, improve our productivity and help us in managing the project more efficiently and this is where adopting prompt engineering and boost our value.

At the end , AI responses still needs to be evaluated and tailored by experts. PM needs to be expert in AI to get the max benefit of this tool.

One result of GenAI is a regression to the mean. It will result in more homogenous artifacts, raising up poor project managers and potentially bringing down good project managers. Simply, the quality of output will stabilize and be more consistent. A happy medium or limiting our potential depending upon how ones looks at it. This is good from a management perspective as it yields consistency and predictibility, but it may limit innovation and future growth of the practice.

If you reached a bulletproof all-encompassing self-learning AI, then training it on any skill, will turn this skill to a commodity. But up till then AI is a valuable tool to help PM

The widespread adoption of prompt engineering is to the advantage of the informed project managers. A prompt engineering formula like CREATE, with its more comprehensive framework, requires a detail-oriented, experienced project manager for optimal performance.

I think that refine prompt to be more specific and concise will reduce refining prompt again and again to get an appropriate result as taught on a chapter I - designing prompts is meaningful and will be productively.

I think prompt engineering can be a differentiator for PMs, allowing them to stand out and demonstrate their value in an AI-driven landscape. While it may help streamline many aspects of a project, skilled project managers who can combine the technical knowledge , the soft skills and management and strategic thinking can harness the true potential of PE and command higher value for themselves
