Will the widespread adoption of prompt engineering commoditize project management skills, or can it help PMs differentiate themselves and command higher value?

Hi PMI Community! I’m Sarah Philbrick, and I work as a Product Manager at PMI with a focus on our learning offerings. As we go on this skill-building journey together, I’m excited to engage in meaningful conversations, explore trending topics, and learn from each other.
Reflecting on one such topic, GenAI and prompt engineering, I am interested to hear your perspective on commoditization vs. differentiation.
Will the widespread adoption of prompt engineering commoditize project management skills, or can it help PMs differentiate themselves and command higher value?
The widespread adoption of prompt engineering will not commoditize project management (PM) skills—in fact, it presents an opportunity for PMs to evolve and differentiate themselves in the AI-driven landscape.
Prompt engineering enhances productivity by enabling faster insights, automating repetitive tasks, and improving decision-making through AI-powered tools like ChatGPT. However, tools alone don’t manage projects—people do. Core PM competencies like stakeholder communication, leadership, critical thinking, and risk management remain human-centric and cannot be easily replaced.
PMs who embrace prompt engineering can position themselves as forward-thinking leaders. By learning how to effectively communicate with AI, they can generate better reports, summaries, timelines, and risk assessments—boosting efficiency and freeing up time for strategic work.
Moreover, the ability to craft precise, impactful prompts becomes a differentiating skill. PMs who master this can command higher value by becoming hybrid professionals—combining domain expertise with AI fluency. They’ll be able to lead AI-augmented teams, improve collaboration, and innovate project delivery methods.
In short, prompt engineering won’t make PMs obsolete. It will empower those who adapt, while exposing gaps in those who resist change. Saving Changes...
Project managers expertise and judgements should be more valuable on not only handle the documentation prepared by AI. We should manage the matter on stateholders unpredictable situration during the project. Saving Changes...

I am absolutely sure that you will differentiate yourself at least in the beginning when it is still new and not everyone uses it. You can be faster than your colleagues, more creative and enjoy higher productivity. Saving Changes...

I made a similar post in another thread but I think it is also relevant here.
I’ve seen firsthand how quickly expectations and workflows are changing. This goes far beyond experimenting with ChatGPT, it’s a redefinition of how we lead, deliver, and prepare teams for the future of work.
We need to move from passive awareness to active transformation. That means embracing five big shifts:
From governance gatekeepers to AI enablers—supporting experimentation while keeping alignment.
From manual oversight to AI-augmented decisions—using real-time dashboards, scenario planning, and smarter data.
From templates to tools that think—empowering teams with GPTs, copilots, and low-code automation.
From one-size-fits-all to role-specific AI agents—customizing AI assistants for PMs, execs, and resource managers.
From skepticism to structured playbooks—creating clarity, guardrails, and a culture of learning.
AI isn’t just reshaping roles—it’s reshaping responsibility. How we respond will define our relevance. Saving Changes...
Prompt Engineering is a new verb that invites us to act and discover fascinating insights. By applying all the knowledge from the PMI platform, it's possible to go beyond limits, because that's what project managers do every day: uniquely manage each project, and this tool aligns us with that purpose. The key lies in balancing use of AI and NI (Natural Intelligence) :). As with everything in life, the PM must make informed decisions on using AI and its responses. Saving Changes...
People skills will be what remains after 10 years when we think of project management. The rest seems to be handled by AI, nevertheless a Project manager without the understanding of AI and its features, will hardly execute people skills, because even people will be speaking as if they are speaking with AI, since AI will be in our daily lives. Prompt engineering won't replace project managers, but it will change their roles. Those who develop prompt engineering skills, effectively use AI, and strengthen their leadership, communication, critical thinking, and emotional intelligence will stand out and be valued in the future of project management. Widespread adoption of prompt engineering will not commoditize project management skills; rather, it presents a significant opportunity for PMs to differentiate themselves and command higher value, if they embrace and leverage it strategically. I strongly believe, writing effective prompts doesn’t replace the need for critical thinking, context, or judgment. It’s a force multiplier, not a standalone skill that negates PM experience or intuition. Similarly, Core PM competencies like, stakeholder management, leadership, negotiation, decision-making under ambiguity, and navigating organizational politics are not easily automated or replaced by prompt engineering or AI.
But, it definitely creates a room for supercharged productivity for PMs who master prompt engineering automating routine tasks: risk logs, stakeholder comms, meeting summaries, scheduling conflicts, RAID logs, etc. Combining AI with tools like Power BI, Jira, Confluence, and Excel via prompts allows PMs to create insightful narratives that influence decisions, an increasingly valuable skill in data-heavy environments. Prompt Engineering is the "new differentiator". PMs who embrace it wisely will not only avoid commoditization but also elevate their strategic value in the organization. Saving Changes...
