I believe prompt engineering is more of an opportunity than a threat for Project Managers.
While it’s true that the widespread adoption of GenAI can “standardize” certain tasks — such as document creation, information gathering, or preliminary data analysis — it also allows PMs to shift their value toward more strategic skills:
the ability to correctly interpret AI-generated outputs;
leveraging prompt engineering to create tailored, context-specific solutions;
leadership, critical thinking, and stakeholder management, which remain hard to automate.
In my view, those who integrate AI effectively into their workflow will not only avoid commoditization but will also differentiate themselves and gain a competitive advantage, becoming “AI-augmented PMs” capable of leading projects more efficiently, with greater speed and accuracy.
In short: the risk of commoditization exists only for those who do not evolve their skills. For those who invest in learning how to use GenAI strategically, their perceived value will increase.
