Will the widespread adoption of prompt engineering commoditize project management skills, or can it help PMs differentiate themselves and command higher value?

Hi PMI Community! I’m Sarah Philbrick, and I work as a Product Manager at PMI with a focus on our learning offerings. As we go on this skill-building journey together, I’m excited to engage in meaningful conversations, explore trending topics, and learn from each other.
Reflecting on one such topic, GenAI and prompt engineering, I am interested to hear your perspective on commoditization vs. differentiation.
Will the widespread adoption of prompt engineering commoditize project management skills, or can it help PMs differentiate themselves and command higher value?

I believe advanced prompt engineering will commoditize many of the traditional and redundant PM tasks-- reporting, scheduling, estimating tasks, EV/BV calculations, etc. For this reason, the prompt-savvy PM will level up significantly in responsibility and demand… especially if she/he has a prowess for identifying gaps where (and when) prompt engineering/AI outputs are most needed.
What do you feel are the key skills and duties that PM's will need as we move into the world of AI? What will we be doing? Saving Changes...
Those with strong adaptability in our rapidly changing world will find significant benefit from implementing prompt engineering techniques within their project management practices Saving Changes...
Prompt engineering won’t commoditize project management—it’ll amplify the value of PMs who can harness it strategically. The real differentiator will be how well they translate complex needs into clear, actionable inputs and use AI to drive alignment, speed, and insight across teams. Saving Changes...

I believe these tools have great potential for increasing efficiency by speeding up routine tasks. This would enable project managers to automate more administrative work and better manage their time. While these tools are incredibly supportive for streamlining projects, they do not replace the critical thinking and decision-making that a human brings. Saving Changes...

Prompt engineering won’t commoditize project management—it will amplify it. PMs who learn to design effective prompts can leverage AI as a force multiplier for planning, analysis, and decision-making. The skill will differentiate PMs who can translate complex project needs into clear AI instructions, enabling faster insights and higher-value delivery. Those who adapt will command more value, not less. Saving Changes...

I strongly believe that the advent of Gen AI will not outrightly replaced the informed Project Managers but rather empower them to function optimally. Just keep up the pace of the technological evolutions and as Project Managers, we will always be relevant and adding value to our respective domains.
Hi! Prompt engineering is important becauseit's essentially the "art" and "sience" of telling an AI exactly what you want in a way that maximizes the quality, relevance, and reliability of the output. Saving Changes...

Prompt engineering improves, if you have a profound background on what you want to achieve from AI. This helps to evaluate and assess the output data or get more quickly the results that are really helpful.
For example, if your domain is IT or constuction, your prompts will be much more precise in the according area you might describe.
I see a risk when someone is completely new to a topic and the AI describes something wrong. Here i would suppose getting initial support or trainings. Saving Changes...
