Hi PMI Community! I’m Sarah Philbrick, and I work as a Product Manager at PMI with a focus on our learning offerings. As we go on this skill-building journey together, I’m excited to engage in meaningful conversations, explore trending topics, and learn from each other.

Reflecting on one such topic, GenAI and prompt engineering, I am interested to hear your perspective on commoditization vs. differentiation.

Will the widespread adoption of prompt engineering commoditize project management skills, or can it help PMs differentiate themselves and command higher value?

With the new generation of generative AI portfolio/program/project manager and business analyst role "are dead" at least in the way they were originally defined. I think a good source to understand that are the two courses on generative AI delivered for free by the PMI, mainly if you see the 3 layer model.
Thank you!!!

I feel like gen AI will replace PMs with time.

Adoption of prompt engineering will boost the performance of practitioners and create more value for the business. PMs with prompt engineering and knowledge of AI when applied will manage projects efficiently while focusing more on people facing tasks like leadership and managing relationships.

I believe AI will help the PM understand deeply all nuances, if the PM is open and willing to research and practise and analyze the AI output. That might just trigger recognizing patterns in real life for implementation.

The closer you get and more you use AI the more you realize it's limitations--not only hallucinations but how about dyslexia! It's simply the next best tool to come along, over-hyped like every new shiny thing, and our new task now is to learn how best to use it to allow humanity to flourish to even greater dizzying heights, and unimaginably faster, than ever before. Crawl, walk, or run to our new reality. Just don't hide, you will get run over.

I think it will help PMs make faster and more accurate decisions based on tools and information. The PM's own analysis should always be taken into account.
For me personally, it will not commoditize project management (PM) skill (for now), because it still lacks data and sometimes will not give the desired feedback and how exactly we want it. While for PM, it knows exactly how it should be done with the equipped skills and years of experience.

Marvin Carmona Jiménez Architect Guanacaste, Costa Rica

Hello, community.
I work as a Project Manager in a construction development on the Pacific coast of Costa Rica.
My day-to-day interaction with AI has been extensive, and since its arrival in our sector, we’ve seen substantial changes in client-facing relationships and in the way seemingly unappealing data—such as budgets or financial information—can now capture their interest.

I don’t believe AI will harm our market, much less replace us. On the contrary, I believe it will enhance and complement our work.
Especially in construction, prompt engineering has become a valuable tool that helps us communicate and explain processes that, even for us as architects, could previously be confusing or difficult to convey.
