Will the widespread adoption of prompt engineering commoditize project management skills, or can it help PMs differentiate themselves and command higher value?

Hi PMI Community! I’m Sarah Philbrick, and I work as a Product Manager at PMI with a focus on our learning offerings. As we go on this skill-building journey together, I’m excited to engage in meaningful conversations, explore trending topics, and learn from each other.
Reflecting on one such topic, GenAI and prompt engineering, I am interested to hear your perspective on commoditization vs. differentiation.
Will the widespread adoption of prompt engineering commoditize project management skills, or can it help PMs differentiate themselves and command higher value?
AI in project management is becoming a big advantage for organizations because it can save time, reduce risks, and improve decision-making.! Saving Changes...
From my perspective, the widespread adoption of GenAI and prompt engineering will not necessarily commoditize project management skills. On the contrary, it creates an opportunity for differentiation.
These tools should be seen as assistants that enhance productivity, not as replacements for human expertise, judgment, or leadership. A project manager who knows how to leverage GenAI for planning, communication, analysis, or risk management becomes someone who maximizes time, accelerates decision-making, and raises the overall quality of project delivery.
In my own experience leading complex digital transformation initiatives, the real differentiator is not access to the technology—which quickly becomes widely available—but rather how strategically it is applied to deliver tangible outcomes. A PM who can integrate frameworks like RFT or CREATE with established practices in agility, governance, or FinOps, adds a level of efficiency and vision that cannot be replicated by the tool alone.
In conclusion, GenAI and prompt engineering do not diminish the value of project managers—they redefine it. Those who adopt them strategically will position themselves as higher-value leaders within their organizations.
I do not believe it will commoditize project management skills. Project Managers still need to provide oversight to what is being provided and use their years of skills to full provide solid documentations and other requirements. It can help to make suggestions and improve what we are providing, give some creative suggestions from other resources to improve upon what is written up and actions to take to drive learning and improvement in current skills to help differentiate the Project Manager provide a higher of value.

The adoption of prompt engineering will give value in project management to those who have a good capacity to adapt in this disruptive world.
I agree with your point but PMI is helping all of us to be become smarter than before. Saving Changes...

With the new generation of generative AI portfolio/program/project manager and business analyst role "are dead" at least in the way they were originally defined. I think a good source to understand that are the two courses on generative AI delivered for free by the PMI, mainly if you see the 3 layer model.
GEN AI and Prompts Engineering are still skills to choice but in coming days it will be mandatory and i think it will change all the Engineering organizations and roles, hopefully it will not be commoditized project management and other positions Saving Changes...

While prompt engineering may streamline certain aspects of project management, skilled project managers who combine technical knowledge, soft skills, and strategic thinking could be continue to command higher value.
GEN AI and Prompts Engineering will be one of Main responsibilities of PM role Saving Changes...

While prompt engineering may make some easily automated project management skills indistinguishable, overall I believe that the use of prompt engineering with LLMs will allow us to drive efficiencies and increase our productivity. Using prompt engineering to decrease task completion time for taks like brainstorming risks, creating burndown/burnup charts, drafting project plans and charters will help PMs to deliver more quickly to the customer and gain insight into things we may not have considered that AI can help us brainstorm/complete. AI tools still need human oversight--we will still need to work collaboratively to achieve project goals, but with prompt engineering we will be able to command higher value as we deliver to the customer. I think any technology that can automate parts of the project management chain can commoditize project management skills once it becomes commonplace. GenAI could be the most powerful such technology that we have seen yet, at least in the recent past. That said, there will always be room to use it as an enabler for managing more complex tasks, e.g., tasks that involve more human to human interaction. We are only scratching the surface of how it can be used and for the foreseeable future, I think it can help differentiate Project Managers if they are open to embracing it and experimenting with it. More than prompt engineering, it will be about being creative in identifying new use cases that GenAI could solve.
I agree that if PMs can be open to embracing prompt engineering and the use of AI, then they open up the door to endless possibilities to drive efficiencies and strengthen their output. It will be interesting to see how the field grows in the next few years. Saving Changes...

Prompt engineering is not a replacement for project management skills, but a powerful tool that can amplify the impact of a smart PM. Those who use it wisely—combined with communication, leadership, and planning skills—will remain in high demand and command greater value. Saving Changes...
