Hi PMI Community! I’m Sarah Philbrick, and I work as a Product Manager at PMI with a focus on our learning offerings. As we go on this skill-building journey together, I’m excited to engage in meaningful conversations, explore trending topics, and learn from each other.

Reflecting on one such topic, GenAI and prompt engineering, I am interested to hear your perspective on commoditization vs. differentiation.

Will the widespread adoption of prompt engineering commoditize project management skills, or can it help PMs differentiate themselves and command higher value?

While prompt engineering may streamline certain aspects of project management, skilled project managers who combine technical knowledge, soft skills, and strategic thinking could be continue to command higher value.
Yes, I do believe that strategic thinking PM's will command higher value with the acquisition and knowledge of AI. However, the game changer will be the creation, formation, and ingenuity of effective prompts.

To get familiar andeven mastering in prompt engineering would definitely empower a project manager
in different aspects and in these days, it is a required facility to belearned. Thanks for the good presentation from PMI.

Hi PMI Community! I’m Olivier, a project management professional passionate about continuous learning and the evolving role of technology in our field.

As we explore topics like GenAI and prompt engineering, I find it fascinating to see how these tools can enhance our ability to plan, analyze, and communicate. While there's a lot of hype, I believe the real value comes from how we choose to integrate AI into our workflows — not to replace human judgment, but to support and strengthen it.

I’m looking forward to learning from your experiences and sharing insights as we all adapt to this new era in project management.

Hello,
Prompt engineering and AI tools (e.g., ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, copilots) can automate large portions of a PM’s traditional workload. However, project management is fundamentally about judgment, leadership, and influence. So, AI doesn’t replace PMs; it raises the bar for what “good” looks like.
PMs who embrace AI as a team productivity layer (not just a personal tool) and lean into influence, leadership, and systems thinking will differentiate themselves and command higher value.

Yes, it reduce the reaction and response time with great results.
It not only give precise output as per prompt but direction for the path forward solution.

I think it's naive to assume it won't commoditize SOME aspects of project management. And I think in the short-term, executives will have an inflated view of how effective AI is at some PM functions, and seek to decrease their PM staff.

But in the long-term, I think people will figure out pretty fast that having a human in the PM spot massively amplifies results. Not only due to soft skills like stakeholder management and communication, but because PM's can help ensure that the inputs AI uses to analyze and make predictions is useful and accurate. Then, they can help communicate that analysis to executives in a thoughtful, nuanced way.

I believe that Generative AI allows us to enhance and expand the scope of our knowledge and skills, and is therefore a fundamental tool in our daily work.

Yes in the short term, it will lead to commoditization as people would jump on this leading to rehashing the same truth in different flavors but in the long run, differentiations would start coming out due to PMs finding out a niche vertical within commodity.

The adoption of prompt engineering will give value in project management to those who have a good capacity to adapt in this disruptive world.
