Will the widespread adoption of prompt engineering commoditize project management skills, or can it help PMs differentiate themselves and command higher value?

Hi PMI Community! I’m Sarah Philbrick, and I work as a Product Manager at PMI with a focus on our learning offerings. As we go on this skill-building journey together, I’m excited to engage in meaningful conversations, explore trending topics, and learn from each other.
Reflecting on one such topic, GenAI and prompt engineering, I am interested to hear your perspective on commoditization vs. differentiation.
Will the widespread adoption of prompt engineering commoditize project management skills, or can it help PMs differentiate themselves and command higher value?
My thinking at this point is that whether we like it or not, and no matter how much further Gen AI evolves, we need to start by making a request for whatever assistance we are seeking. The nature and quality of that request will determine the eventual output. Beware!! "..garbage in garbage out.."
So prompt engineering is probably here to stay, and given out very diverse backgrounds, cultures, and experiences, we will always be largely differentiated despite our use of standard prompt engineering tools and techniques Saving Changes...
Prompt engineering won't commoditize project management, but it can significantly enhance a PM's capabilities. By leveraging AI tools effectively, PMs can automate routine tasks, gain deeper insights from data, and focus on strategic decision-making and complex problem-solving. This differentiation will be crucial for commanding higher value in an increasingly competitive market. Saving Changes...

I believe project management is more of an art rather than science as it requires the project manager to use his/her project experiences and soft skills to navigate uncertainities. While the widespread adoption of prompt engineering will definitely reduce the time needed to create super efficient prompts, i doubt it will commoditize project management skills as project management is an art :-)... The widespread adoption of prompt engineering can have a dual effect on the project management landscape. On one hand, the automation and standardization could potentially commoditize certain project management skills. Tasks that were once considered specialized may become more routine, leading to a potential devaluation of basic project management services. On the other hand, I am optimistic that this technological advancement can actually empower project managers to differentiate themselves and command higher value in the market. By leveraging prompt engineering tools effectively, project managers can streamline processes, improve efficiency, and deliver superior results to their clients. This ability to adapt and excel in a rapidly evolving technological environment can set experienced project managers apart from their peers. Ultimately, I believe that the key lies in how project managers embrace and integrate prompt engineering into their skill set. Those who can effectively combine technical expertise with strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills will not only survive but thrive in the ever-changing project management landscape! GenAI and prompt engineering provide more approaches for the PM's toolkit and there is no doubt as to its utility in expediting the creation of reasonable first-cut PM artifacts.
But without a trained and experienced professional eye on Gen AI output to assess, modify, complement, and at times even discard it, Gen AI could easily take a person not familiar with PM practices down a path leading to project failure and a loss of credibility, not just for the individual using GenAI, but for the organization as well.
Will Gen AI and Prompt Engineering commoditize PM skills? Replace PMs? Not a chance.
Can it help PMs differentiate themselves and command higher value? Perhaps.
Somehow the old saying, "A fool with a tool is still a fool." comes to mind. GenAI, with or without prompt engineering, is a tool. Whether you are a PM Pro or a PM novice, use it wisely.

I think most people don't understand how generative AI can impact their daily lives. Once they see more examples, they will likely become more open to using it. Saving Changes...

Like the evolution of computers replacing typewriters, so has generative AI and prompt engineering come to replace the manual ways of doing projects as PMs. As project professionals, genAI and prompt engineering is the way to go, to enhance accurate and faster delivery of our project outcomes.
