Hi PMI Community! I’m Sarah Philbrick, and I work as a Product Manager at PMI with a focus on our learning offerings. As we go on this skill-building journey together, I’m excited to engage in meaningful conversations, explore trending topics, and learn from each other.

Reflecting on one such topic, GenAI and prompt engineering, I am interested to hear your perspective on commoditization vs. differentiation.

Will the widespread adoption of prompt engineering commoditize project management skills, or can it help PMs differentiate themselves and command higher value?

This is a great nudge (or prompting) question for how we as PMs might use AI! My point of view for now is that widespread adoption of prompt engineering and AI tools doesn’t have to commoditize project management—it redefines it. Rather than diminishing the value of PMs, it presents a unique opportunity to elevate our roles from tactical executors to strategic architects of delivery.

I view AI as a powerful enabler. Tools like prompt engineering allow us to automate routine tasks, synthesize complex data, and generate insights with unprecedented speed. But the true value lies in how we leverage these tools—not merely to work faster, but to think more critically and lead more effectively.

By integrating AI into our workflows, we unlock the capacity to focus on higher-order skills: stakeholder alignment, risk navigation, change adoption, and strategic decision-making. These are deeply human competencies that remain essential—and increasingly valuable—in a technology-driven landscape.

Prompt engineering, when used thoughtfully, becomes a catalyst for differentiation. It empowers PMs to design smarter delivery frameworks, ask sharper questions, and guide teams with greater clarity and confidence.

In short, I see those who embrace AI not as a threat but as someone who can stand out. By remaining flexible to the evolving technology landscape they can articulate and command higher value not because they resist change, but because they architect it.

With the new generation of generative AI portfolio/program/project manager and business analyst role "are dead" at least in the way they were originally defined. I think a good source to understand that are the two courses on generative AI delivered for free by the PMI, mainly if you see the 3 layer model.

Adoption of prompt engineering will contribute to the development and increase the value of Project Managers, as it is a very powerful tool. However, PMs must find ways for this tool to complement and enhance our work, optimizing our efforts. However, our vision, creativity, and experience will always be required for achieving project results.

I believe project management should evolve so AI handles routine, repetitive tasks, enabling project managers to focus on steering and supervising projects while retaining approval authority over decisions that affect scope, budgets, and client communications.

Hi, in my view this widespread adoption of prompt engineering will provide the project managers with a digital assistant who will analyze, understand and produce project related outputs more quickly, reliably and efficiently reducing the routine or redundant work of a project manager. And since it's prompt engineering therefore somehow PMs will be directly talking to Mechas in a more advanced and efficient way than with a human Assistant PMs.

AI prompt engineering in project management provides various insights and vast information relating to the project on the go however, the tailor is the project manager, where he can condense the content and data, refine it in a specific way to match his need.

Hi Sarah,
It's an interesting and very much needed skill - Prompt Engg for PM's - me as a PM have to keep levelling up as Prompt Engineering keeps evolving every week & month and increase the efficiency and effectiveness of project success - so we stay however we need to adapt to this skill with the change.

Actually, I see promoting Gen AI as a PM is depending on the perspective of each PM, I do believe that each person has his own skills that are irreplaceable, Using Gen AI would be useful and add a high value for (already) skilled PM.
