Hi PMI Community! I’m Sarah Philbrick, and I work as a Product Manager at PMI with a focus on our learning offerings. As we go on this skill-building journey together, I’m excited to engage in meaningful conversations, explore trending topics, and learn from each other.

Reflecting on one such topic, GenAI and prompt engineering, I am interested to hear your perspective on commoditization vs. differentiation.

Will the widespread adoption of prompt engineering commoditize project management skills, or can it help PMs differentiate themselves and command higher value?

Hi Sarah,
I suppose that AI will take over repetitive and time-consuming tasks that previously consumed a significant portion of PMs' time. Instead of competing with AI, PMs can use this freed-up time to focus on tasks where a machine can't replace a human. These tasks will differentiate them in the marketplace.

Everything has its own pros and cons. It would depend on how, where, when, for what and by which means prompt engineering would be put to use. If it is used judiciously, then it may add value in project management. On the other hand, overuse of technology can have a lot of detrimental impacts on factors like ability to think rationally and use genuine creative skills.

The widespread adoption of prompt engineering and indeed Gen AI as a whole will undoubtedly lead to significant increases in the efficiency of project managers. They will not however necessarily lead to commensurate increases in the effectiveness of project managers, unless they use these tools and the insights and time freed up in ways that address the real needs and challenges facing projects. Those project managers who understand how to use these tools efficiently and effectively will be able to differentiate themselves and command higher value

The insights required for PM work are far more complex than many stakeholders realize. AI provides the time to assemble comprehensive models and deeper thought than might otherwise to possible when constrained by the average budget. The Manager's role then can add greater value to the final deliverables, thereby giving greater value to the PM's work.

With Generative AI, the role of the Project Manager will change from what we know today. New skills will be required, and we should consider AI tools as a PM assistant. This means Project Managers will be expected to focus on more valuable tasks such as crisis resolution, effective communication, and stakeholder management.

I firmly believe that Generative AI will not replace project managers. It will empower them. By enhancing their intelligence, efficiency, and decision-making capabilities, GenAI enables project managers to deliver high-quality outcomes on or ahead of schedule.

In my opinion using AI will help Project Managers to perform their tasks with higher quality and greater speed but on the other hand the number of Project Managers needed within organizations will decrease.

I believe that the adoption of prompt engineering really enhances project management skills, of course, as long as the specialist manages to combine previous human skills with his or her own contribution when incorporating generative AI into project development.

AI is a tool for efficiency and will help PMs get through reporting and planning faster but I still see the collaborative value of the PM from a team standpoint.
