Hi PMI Community! I’m Sarah Philbrick, and I work as a Product Manager at PMI with a focus on our learning offerings. As we go on this skill-building journey together, I’m excited to engage in meaningful conversations, explore trending topics, and learn from each other.

Reflecting on one such topic, GenAI and prompt engineering, I am interested to hear your perspective on commoditization vs. differentiation.

Will the widespread adoption of prompt engineering commoditize project management skills, or can it help PMs differentiate themselves and command higher value?

Prompt Engineering has a huge potential to greatly streamline and allign the tasks based on the complexity of the project and facilitate the work of Project Managers.

I suppose that PMs still go towards differentiation using AI and to know what is the new trends and features and how it will be beneficial to their work as not all PMs are using AI the same way, even regarding prompt engineering each PM need to provide his own insight for the same request

Given the pace and workload of a PM, the Gen AI should just be another tool in the toolbox to help them be effective and efficient!

Nothing can commoditize a construction project manager, therefore using AI will benefit PM's who learn how to master it.

The adoption of AI will enable us to better manage our project portfolio, seeking to maximize the value offered to our customers. We will have greater responsibility in validating results that will sometimes be generated by software, while at the same time giving us greater capacity to seek better results.

Whereas I appreciate that the future is for those who will adapt to changing technology which includes generative AI, we risk having project managers who will not be able to think clearly and offer anything of value without the use of AI. I feel like we need a hybrid approach. Over reliance on AI to do all our PM work will erase crucial skills like the ability to sound human/have a voice as we write. Trust me, it can be detected.

I think that IA is a huge support but the responses from IA is important to mix with the project manager experience in order to obteneid a response aline with the project manager needs.
