Hi PMI Community! I’m Sarah Philbrick, and I work as a Product Manager at PMI with a focus on our learning offerings. As we go on this skill-building journey together, I’m excited to engage in meaningful conversations, explore trending topics, and learn from each other.

Reflecting on one such topic, GenAI and prompt engineering, I am interested to hear your perspective on commoditization vs. differentiation.

Will the widespread adoption of prompt engineering commoditize project management skills, or can it help PMs differentiate themselves and command higher value?

Like other professions, AI has come to add to or enhance the methods and procedures adopted by PMs. As a tool, AI has the potential to turn or alter some tasks and roles by automated routine tasks. Consequently PMs must embrace and develop AI skills such as prompt engineering, critical thinking and data analysis among others to remain relevant and effective.
However, project management goes beyond technical skills. Therefore, PMS of today need to add human-centered skills such as interpersonal or human relations, ethical leadership, communication, tailoring and strategic planning to add value to stay above the waters

strongly believe that the advent of Gen AI will not outrightly replaced the informed Project Managers but rather empower them to function optimally. Just keep up the pace of the technological evolutions and as Project Managers, we will always be relevant and adding value to our respective domains very nice

in my opinion Widespread prompt engineering will likely both commoditize some project management skills and create opportunities for differentiation and higher value. It will automate routine tasks like drafting reports and risk logs, making those specific skills less valuable, while simultaneously enabling PMs who can expertly use AI to add more value through strategic thinking and complex human-centric tasks like stakeholder management. The ability to combine technical knowledge with soft skills like strategic thinking and human communication will be the key differentiator.

From what I am learning about Generative AI and prompt engineering, it is certainly value added. Only time will tell if it commands higher values. Right now, we know and can prove that it will save Project managers tons of time, allowing them to manage the relationships with stakeholders. In my experience, how well you work with people has and always will be a key element that differentiates you from the next PM.
