Hi PMI Community! I’m Sarah Philbrick, and I work as a Product Manager at PMI with a focus on our learning offerings. As we go on this skill-building journey together, I’m excited to engage in meaningful conversations, explore trending topics, and learn from each other.

Reflecting on one such topic, GenAI and prompt engineering, I am interested to hear your perspective on commoditization vs. differentiation.

Will the widespread adoption of prompt engineering commoditize project management skills, or can it help PMs differentiate themselves and command higher value?

Prompt engineering and generative AI bring real value to project management, especially for those who understand how to use them to work smarter and accelerate processes. However, I still don’t see AI replacing project managers anytime soon.

PMI is in a unique position. Their Certified Professional background ensures this.
AI is a great fit-for-purpose tool for Project Management.
PMI has more than a half-century of growth and development behind it. A PMBOK, Waterfall and Agile methodologies across an incalculable number of disciplines and professions.
All this, along with networks from Harvard and MIT to NASA are the basis for their developing LLMs that are fit-for-purpose.
Commoditize - perhaps, but with purpose. It is the broad use across the professional landscape that will determine which stars arise from which professions and verticals.

I think it will differentiate you skill set as a pm. It's a tool at the end of the day. If you Master the tool you set yourself apart from those who don't.

In my point of view, AI, prompt engineering and all that stuff are quite helpful either to new PM's, or experienced ones. However, it is quite doubtful if at same point in the future PM role will be obsolete.
I'm a ex-military pilot by trade and I've seen how the evolution in fighter and civilian jets. Still, pilots are in command in an enhanced and augmented environment. Average pilots may survive, however exceptional ones make the difference and win the battle every time. Same environment, different personalities with unique skills and abilities.
Human nature always makes the difference.

In my opinion, these first steps in GEN AI for project management are helping to reduce administrative time. However, there are other very important issues that remain crucial in day-to-day management. It's understandable that we can train it, but the results still need to be fully reviewed, and it could duplicate the initial workload.

Hi Sara,

From my point of view, the use of GenAI and prompt engineering will hardly commoditize project management skills, since they require abilities from the project manager that AI tools will not possess unless provided with a great deal of context. However, I do believe they can create a significant differentiating factor compared to those who do not use them. Nevertheless, it will also depend on other circumstances and on what the project manager intends to achieve.

Like other professions, I believe AI has come to add to or enhance the methods and practices of project management. PMs must therefore, embrace the technique to gain skills in prompt engineering, critical thinking, data analysis in order to remain relevant and effective. As a tool, AI has the potential to render certain roles, methods and procedures as automatic routines.
However, the processes and methods of project management go beyond technical skills. In my opinion, as PMs we must in addition set our eys on ethical leadership, tailoring, communication, interpersonal and other human-centered skills to add value to the profession to not only be relevant but in particular, stay above the waters.

As a project manager we need to leverage the emerging techniques to overcome the issues and to get an innovative ideas. However, we need to interprete the responses of chatbot for its accuracy based on our input.

AI as a tool, is an enhancer, an enabler to support our methods, procedures and make our operational processes more effective and productive. However, there are human-related skills such ethical leadership, cultural diversity, motivation that are key for a successful project management are beyond prompt engineering. PMs must thus prioritize these skills to add value to be outstanding

I believe prompt AI can support our effectivity and we should all think how we can do it in every task we do
