Hi PMI Community! I’m Sarah Philbrick, and I work as a Product Manager at PMI with a focus on our learning offerings. As we go on this skill-building journey together, I’m excited to engage in meaningful conversations, explore trending topics, and learn from each other.

Reflecting on one such topic, GenAI and prompt engineering, I am interested to hear your perspective on commoditization vs. differentiation.

Will the widespread adoption of prompt engineering commoditize project management skills, or can it help PMs differentiate themselves and command higher value?

I don’t think the widespread adoption of prompt engineering will commoditize project management at all; if anything, it’ll help PMs stand out. AI is definitely the future, and learning how to work with it is becoming essential. But project management is still very people-focused. AI can only work with the information we feed it, and it can’t replace the leadership, communication, and judgment that define a strong PM.

Instead, prompt engineering gives us a new edge. It can help us analyze data faster, find creative solutions, and streamline everyday tasks. The PMs who learn to use AI effectively will not only save time but also deliver more value, making them even more valuable and in demand.

Using GenAI is part of the agility of Project Manager's in coping up with today's AI influenced working environment. However, a Waterfall PM can be in conflict with an Agile PM noting the pace of working and resources being used. The Waterfalls PM always validates the Agile PM's output by manual computation where instead of moving fast, the work moves backward. This clash of generations of Baby Boomers, Gen and Millenials in the work place should be sorted out especially if the Baby Boomers and GenX are under the Leadership or C-suite who are not easy to define when it comes to hierarchy and application of old school system. Where is such cases, there is bias caused by influence and out of control by the PM.
In my experience, when someone's using GenAI applied to their skills it has a singnificant improvement on the outcome you are able to provide. So, to me it can be a way to get higher value.

I think a project manager who can create good prompts is ultimately a competent project manager.
What do you all think?

It will definitely help PMs differentiate themselves from the herd, which would enable them to command higher value in their organization. Its a powerful tool to add to your skillset moving forward in this world of AI.

Those who integrate AI and prompt engineering effectively will streamline documentation, stakeholder communication, and risk forecasting, elevating their strategic value. However, PMs who rely solely on traditional methods may find their roles reduced to administrative functions. In essence, AI won’t replace project managers, but project managers who master AI-driven tools and prompt engineering will command higher value and lead transformation across industries.

While AI will commoditize some routine PM tasks, leadership, data analysis insight, team building, and communication skills will remain differentiators.

So much of Project Management is people skills so I think the role of project manager will shift more to the importance of soft skills and less to the "building of plans".

There are so many tools in the toolbox for PMs - this is just another one to aide in decision making. It may save some time but may require more oversight from senior PMs when employed by junior staff.
