Hi PMI Community! I’m Sarah Philbrick, and I work as a Product Manager at PMI with a focus on our learning offerings. As we go on this skill-building journey together, I’m excited to engage in meaningful conversations, explore trending topics, and learn from each other.

Reflecting on one such topic, GenAI and prompt engineering, I am interested to hear your perspective on commoditization vs. differentiation.

Will the widespread adoption of prompt engineering commoditize project management skills, or can it help PMs differentiate themselves and command higher value?

AI helps PMs create more value for themselves and the organization. Gone are the days when we spend a lot of time create dozens of documents from scratch. Now with a good and precise prompt, all these documents are created withing few minutes.

The PM can spend more time doing other important work. These days we PMs are to speak more a like a customer than executive.

In all good prompts make the work easier.

In my opinion, I think that project managers who embrace AI will have an "edge" in the opportunity marketplace over those that do not, at least until AI skills become commonplace.

Adoption of GenAI and prompt engineering will definitely benefit the project manager to streamline the project management processes and made more informed decisions. Nevertheless, the ethical responsibilities in using these tools are imperative to ensure secure, ethic and compliance to the laws or regulations.
Adoption of Prompt engineering will certainly benefit the Project Manager, and Stakeholders and will enhance his values, and also provide value addition to the project performance, execution and satisfaction to all stakeholders.

Great question, Sarah — I believe GenAI and prompt engineering will differentiate, not commoditize, skilled PMs. Those who learn to harness AI effectively—integrating insights, accelerating decision-making, and improving stakeholder communication—will amplify their strategic impact. The true value lies in combining AI fluency with human judgment, context, and leadership—skills that no algorithm can replicate.

Hi PMI Community,
From my perspective, AI can be a powerful ally for entry level project managers like myself, offering valuable support across nearly every phase of a project.

However, while its benefits are undeniable, AI can also present certain challenges particularly by potentially limiting the development of essential skills such as report writing and information gathering from project processes.

I think AI is still guided by Humans, so best Project Managers should use AI accordingly and make sure to use correct techniques & best ways of Prompt Engineering so that AI gives the accurate results without any hallucinations.

The rise of prompt engineering might make some project management tasks — like reports or risk summaries — feel more routine. But it also gives PMs a huge opportunity to stand out. Those who learn to use AI thoughtfully can spend less time on paperwork and more time leading, communicating, and making better decisions. In the end, AI won’t replace project managers — it’ll highlight the value of those who combine technology with good judgment and a human touch.

As the world moves deeper into the era of AI-assisted work, prompt engineering—the skill of effectively communicating with AI systems—has emerged as a crucial capability. Some believe that as AI tools become more sophisticated, they might commoditize traditional project management skills. However, I see it differently.

Prompt engineering, rather than replacing project management expertise, can actually amplify a PM’s strategic value. Project managers who learn to use AI tools effectively can automate repetitive administrative work—such as documentation, risk logs, and reporting—while focusing more on leadership, stakeholder management, and decision-making.

In this sense, AI doesn’t make project managers redundant—it makes them more capable. A PM skilled in prompt engineering can:

Generate tailored project reports in seconds.

Simulate “what-if” project scenarios using AI models.

Improve communication clarity across teams.

Accelerate knowledge retrieval and lesson-learned documentation.

Those who integrate human judgment with AI literacy will differentiate themselves and command higher value. The true opportunity lies in using prompt engineering not as a shortcut, but as a strategic tool to enhance productivity, foresight, and creativity in managing complex projects.

So, in my view, the future will not commoditize project management—it will elevate it for those who evolve with technology.
