Hi PMI Community! I’m Sarah Philbrick, and I work as a Product Manager at PMI with a focus on our learning offerings. As we go on this skill-building journey together, I’m excited to engage in meaningful conversations, explore trending topics, and learn from each other.

Reflecting on one such topic, GenAI and prompt engineering, I am interested to hear your perspective on commoditization vs. differentiation.

Will the widespread adoption of prompt engineering commoditize project management skills, or can it help PMs differentiate themselves and command higher value?

Prompt engineering indeed influences both outcomes and perspectives. With the rapid integration of generative AI, the project manager’s role is entering a transformative phase. Similar to the introduction of computers in past decades, AI tools must be deployed thoughtfully, redefining workflows while maintaining strong governance and oversight.

Despite its exponential progress, generative AI still struggles to deliver contextually accurate and reliable results without human direction. This underscores the evolving importance of project managers—not just as coordinators, but as strategic enablers ensuring that AI-driven outcomes remain efficient, consistent, and aligned with project objectives.

Projects vary significantly (not just by location, but by culture and preference), and even though prompt engineering should theoretically boost up aspects of management and development, I believe the acceptance of internal and external stakeholders/partners pose a bigger challenge than the commoditizing of PMP skills.

Project management is about people: working with people and for people. Part of the reason why projects are unique endeavours is because of people who are, let's face it, unique! Any improvement in other areas will allow you to focus on what's truly important.

I think it will take at least a generation before AI commoditizes project management beyond a minimal amount simply due to the rigidity of older and less technologically literate stakeholders who have spent their entire careers, albeit becoming experts, without any AI. There are proficiency, efficiency, and trust hurdles we will be spending years evolving.

The widespread adoption of prompt engineering will aid in improving the success rate of projects while saving valuable time and balancing the workload of the PMs. As with every specialized area, the level of experience and expertise with prompt engineering will also help in differentiation of the very best from the best.

Prompt engineering can be a great tool to enhance project managers efficiency, allowing them to create higher value in their role.

AI will not replace the project manager. It is a matter of time that the project manager will learn to work seamlessly with AI in achieving project tasks. Soon it will be - how did we complete tasks without AI!

Truly AI as a tool has come to aid and enhance processes and the techniques of delivering results. As PMs, we need to embrace it to speed up our assignments in order to remain relevant and competitive.
However, we need to tailor the tool in line with the values and ethics of our noble profession. Thus, in addition ton embracing and adopting AI, PMs must place premium on the human-centered skills such as leading teams, conflict management, stakeholder engagements, customer care and other interpersonal skills that play vital roles in project management.

I believe that PM intervention and governance will always be required to direct the use of the AI tools. Like any tool you need someone to focus its use and refine its performance.
