Will the widespread adoption of prompt engineering commoditize project management skills, or can it help PMs differentiate themselves and command higher value?

Hi PMI Community! I’m Sarah Philbrick, and I work as a Product Manager at PMI with a focus on our learning offerings. As we go on this skill-building journey together, I’m excited to engage in meaningful conversations, explore trending topics, and learn from each other.
Reflecting on one such topic, GenAI and prompt engineering, I am interested to hear your perspective on commoditization vs. differentiation.
Will the widespread adoption of prompt engineering commoditize project management skills, or can it help PMs differentiate themselves and command higher value?
it will redefine project management. Routine PM tasks like documentation and reporting will be automated, but strategic thinking, stakeholder management, and leadership will become even more valuable. Project managers who master AI tools to enhance decision-making and productivity will differentiate themselves and command higher value. In short, AI will commoditize tasks, not talent.

I don’t believe the adoption of prompt engineering will commoditize project management — if anything, it will elevate it. AI can take on repetitive administrative work, freeing PMs to focus on higher-value activities like stakeholder engagement, strategic planning, and decision-making.
Prompt engineering isn’t about replacing project managers; it’s about enhancing their ability to gather insights, communicate clearly, and make data-driven decisions faster. Those who learn how to effectively collaborate with AI tools — crafting precise prompts, interpreting results, and applying them to real project scenarios — will stand out as more efficient, adaptable, and innovative leaders.
In my view, the differentiator won’t just be technical knowledge of AI, but how PMs integrate it to improve outcomes and relationships. The ones who embrace it thoughtfully will absolutely command higher value.

I completely agree with your submission, especially your point about AI freeing project managers to focus on higher-value activities. There’s often a sense of fear around AI, but if people start seeing it as a tool that enhances our work rather than replaces it, they’ll begin to recognize its real value. AI brings efficiency, clarity, and support. It’s not taking away jobs but reshaping how we work, and those who don’t adapt risk missing out on new opportunities.
I like to think of AI as similar to when calculators were first introduced. They made solving problems faster, but you still needed to understand the formulas. The same applies to AI. If you don’t know how to use it effectively, it won’t be helpful. It’s also a great tool for brainstorming and refining ideas you can’t fully articulate yet, which makes it an incredible partner for project managers navigating complex challenges.

One must use mental health strategies and tools while utilizing AI so that they do not get lost in the AI world and disconnect from reality. AI is meant to take away stressors and help solve problems in the real world in today's time but, that means less engagement on the persons end of the work which means the brain is not exercising and learning. AI takes your reality to a new world if you're not careful. Take mental breaks and do not forget to exercise your mind. Stay woke. Saving Changes...
Prompt engineering can help project managers stand out and be more valuable. When PMs use prompt engineering well, they can get better results from AI tools, solve problems faster, and lead teams more effectively. Instead of making project management skills ordinary, learning prompt engineering helps PMs stay ahead and command higher value in their jobs. Saving Changes...

It will help PMs differentiate and command higher value—if leveraged strategically.
Here’s why:
1. Prompt Engineering as an Enabler, Not a Replacement/h4Prompt engineering doesn’t replace core PM competencies like leadership, stakeholder management, and strategic thinking.Instead, it enhances efficiency in tasks such as risk analysis, reporting, and decision support. 2. PMs Who Master AI Will Stand Out/h4PMs who learn to craft effective prompts can extract better insights from GenAI tools, improving forecasting, resource planning, and communication. This positions them as AI-savvy leaders, which is increasingly valuable in digital transformation projects. 3. Commoditization Risk Exists for Routine Tasks/h4Basic PM tasks (status reports, meeting summaries) can be automated, reducing the perceived value of PMs who only focus on administrative work.Differentiation comes from applying AI to strategic areas—like scenario planning, stakeholder engagement, and aligning projects with business objectives. 4. Higher Value Through Strategic Integration/h4PMs who integrate GenAI into governance frameworks, compliance checks, and business alignment will command higher value because they drive innovation and risk mitigation.
Prompt engineering won’t commoditize PM skills—it will amplify the gap between PMs who adapt and those who don’t. Those who embrace AI and prompt engineering will become strategic advisors, not just task managers.

With current technological advances, managers who are well prepared with tools such as prompt engineering will certainly be ahead in their projects. It is recommended to use them ethically and, above all, not to become attached to them; rather, seek mechanisms to avoid becoming outdated. Saving Changes...
