Hi PMI Community! I’m Sarah Philbrick, and I work as a Product Manager at PMI with a focus on our learning offerings. As we go on this skill-building journey together, I’m excited to engage in meaningful conversations, explore trending topics, and learn from each other.
Reflecting on one such topic, GenAI and prompt engineering, I am interested to hear your perspective on commoditization vs. differentiation.
Will the widespread adoption of prompt engineering commoditize project management skills, or can it help PMs differentiate themselves and command higher value?

The adoption of prompt engineering will enhance productivity and open up a whole world of possibilities for project managers. The individual skills of the PMs will ascertain the level of value that can be derived through prompt engineering. Commoditizing it will thus not be possible in my view. Saving Changes...

Prompt Engineering becomes part of the PM skills. Saving Changes...
We all know that generative AI (genAI) is set to impact almost every aspect of our daily lives in the coming months and years. While we often use outputs from current genAI solutions by OpenAI, Microsoft, Google, and Meta, it's important to acknowledge that these results cannot be completely relied upon. Prompt engineering can help achieve specific and detailed results, but as consumers, we must ensure that appropriate checks and balances are in place. Additionally, I believe that a standard governance model for generative AI will become mainstream in the coming years. Currently, commercial genAI solutions are part of a competitive race, and while these major organizations have implemented robust security measures, there is a growing need for a standard governance model to prevent the misuse of this rapidly emerging technology. What is the purpose behind invention of Generative AI? To get assistance, to make things easier, to make things less time consuming, to make us free from certain tasks so that we can focus on more creative and challenging tasks ahead. Its also a product developed after going through all Project Management activities. It certainly can be an assistance to the Project management skills but can never commoditize them. Hi Sarah - the integration of Gen AI for PM is an additional value and great to have as GenAI is evolving rapidly in other sectors. It's an absolute time-efficiency to have its assistance. This is the moment where PM should be able to harness GenAI because like it or not it will only be useful if it has "human-in-the-loop" approach (at least for now). Saving Changes...

The PM should still evaluate the responses and decide how to implement the information provided by the LLMs. The implementation will still rely on the PM analytical, communication and problem solving skills.
It can certainly increase the productivity of the project manager, which can make him again more competitive. Saving Changes...

The widespread adoption of prompt engineering in project management could have a significant impact on the profession. There are two perspectives to consider.
On one hand, the commoditization of project management skills might occur, as prompt engineering tools can automate routine tasks, streamline workflows, and provide instant insights. This could potentially reduce the need for traditional project management skills and make basic project management more accessible to a broader audience. Consequently, the role of a project manager might be seen as less specialized, leading to a decrease in demand for those who only possess conventional PM skills.
However, prompt engineering also presents opportunities for program managers, project managers, and PMOs to differentiate themselves and command higher value. By leveraging these advanced tools, PMs can focus on higher-level strategic tasks, such as stakeholder management, risk mitigation, and decision-making, which cannot be easily automated or always require human intelligence for decisions without clear right or wrong boundaries. The ability to integrate AI-driven insights with human judgment and experience can make PMs indispensable. Furthermore, those who can adeptly use prompt engineering to enhance team collaboration, innovation, and efficiency will be highly sought after.
In summary, while prompt engineering may commoditize some aspects of project management, it can also elevate the role by enabling PMs to focus on more complex and value-added activities. The key for project managers will be to continuously adapt, upskill, and embrace these new technologies to stay ahead in a rapidly evolving landscape. This dual approach can help them differentiate themselves, increase their strategic value, and ultimately command higher value in the marketplace. Saving Changes...
I believe that adoption of prompt engineering is more likely to enhance the value of project management skills rather than commoditize them. Project managers who embrace these technologies and integrate them into their workflows can differentiate themselves, drive better project outcomes, and command higher value in their careers. In mi case, I've been trying some tools to Enhanced Efficiency and Productivity, to make summaries or automate routinary information to consolidated into someting easy to use for decition making, It als has helped me to Improved Communication and Collaboration, whener I've a doubt about the tone or the content of a document i've receive good results to my promts of how to improve them.
