Hi PMI Community! I’m Sarah Philbrick, and I work as a Product Manager at PMI with a focus on our learning offerings. As we go on this skill-building journey together, I’m excited to engage in meaningful conversations, explore trending topics, and learn from each other.

Reflecting on one such topic, GenAI and prompt engineering, I am interested to hear your perspective on commoditization vs. differentiation.

Will the widespread adoption of prompt engineering commoditize project management skills, or can it help PMs differentiate themselves and command higher value?

Hello All - I feel GenAI is a very powerful tool but not a replacement for the human interaction, people management and critical decisions that may require an immediate interaction. It does however, run circles around humans when it comes to creating reports, document templates and etc. Overall, I do believe PMs are at risk and. we will continue to thrive in any industry.

GenAi is a powerful tool that, when used ethically and responsibly, can help project managers bring additional value and achieve project objectives more effectively. Although GenAI will continue to raise the expectations placed on project managers, those who use it ethically and effectively will stand out rather than disappear.

As generative AI continues to evolve at a rapid pace, it’s natural for project managers to wonder what this means for the future of our profession. A common question arises: Will AI replace project managers? While the concern is understandable, the reality is more nuanced—and far more empowering.

Despite AI’s impressive capabilities, we remain a long way from a world where it can fully replace human project managers. The complexity of project management extends far beyond task tracking or data analysis. It requires human reasoning, contextual judgment, emotional intelligence, organizational awareness, stakeholder management, and the ability to navigate ambiguity. These qualities are not only difficult for AI to replicate—they are foundational to successful project leadership.

I think the latter, if used correctly it can aid in the differentiation and improvement of PM Value.

Hi PMI Community,

I strongly believe that although prompt engineering can simplify parts of project management, professionals who integrate technical proficiency with solid soft skills and strategic insight will continue to stand out and command greater value.

Interesting angle, Sarah! I believe Prompt engineering won’t commoditize project management, it will expose who can think beyond templates. Anyone can type a prompt, but not everyone can frame the right problem, interpret nuanced outputs, and turn insights into strategic action. GenAI is the great equalizer for routine tasks, but the differentiator will be PMs who combine AI fluency with human judgment, creativity, and influence. In short, prompts don’t make you valuable, what you do with them does.

While prompt engineering may streamline certain aspects of project management, skilled project managers who combine technical knowledge, soft skills, and strategic thinking could be continue to command higher value.
I agree! Prompt engineering will help with efficiencies. Those PMs who can take their critical thinking and business acumen and apply that to their prompts will gain the most efficiencies and will allow them to use those advanced prompts to share their knowledge with others, allowiing them to grow, as well.
