Hi PMI Community! I’m Sarah Philbrick, and I work as a Product Manager at PMI with a focus on our learning offerings. As we go on this skill-building journey together, I’m excited to engage in meaningful conversations, explore trending topics, and learn from each other.

Reflecting on one such topic, GenAI and prompt engineering, I am interested to hear your perspective on commoditization vs. differentiation.

Will the widespread adoption of prompt engineering commoditize project management skills, or can it help PMs differentiate themselves and command higher value?

Our organisation only recently started to introduce GenAI training. For many colleagues, it is still unclear to us how exactly we are going to use them in our daily work. Nevetheless in a team that is overwhelmed with tasks, I believe having AI as a teammate will increase order and relieve stress.

I was originally hesitant about using AI in the workplace but as I have learned more about it, how to tailor it, and how to fact check I believe it can be a valuable tool that we as project and program managers can use to enhance our work and better support our stakeholders. I do not believe that AI will or ever should replace the human element, but it can be used to enhance our capabilities.

The adoption of prompt engineering will both commoditize project management skills and help PMs differentiate themselves. It depends on the project manager and their desire and discipline. PMs who view prompt engineering as a work in progress will continually seek to enhance, while those who discover a prompt that provides a lot of information and looks and sounds good will be satisfied.

Simple tasks and activities should become automated. The Secret Sauce is in the Augmentation as human skills and understandings coupled with examples and adjustments should be the differentiators. These reside in, among other buckets, the experienced and well-scared brains.

With the new generation of generative AI portfolio/program/project manager and business analyst role "are dead" at least in the way they were originally defined. I think a good source to understand that are the two courses on generative AI delivered for free by the PMI, mainly if you see the 3 layer model.
Prompt engineering will help PMs become more professional and technology-savvy, which opens new opportunities for them.

While prompt engineering may streamline certain aspects of project management, skilled project managers who combine technical knowledge, soft skills, and strategic thinking could be continue to command higher value.
Hi Sarah! I think the widespread adoption of prompt engineering will give every project manager the ability to focus on high-level strategies and how to properly use AI tools, but each project manager's specialization will provide the right approach to get the best results from using prompt engineering.

AI will allow us to better standardize and automate logs, tools, etc. and leave time for the art of project management.

Good project managers will always be required. AI can help project managers be even better.

I agree. Prompt engineering provides structure but the content within that structure is still defined by PM. Project manger can defferentiate him/her self in this arena and demand higher value.

Will allow more differentiation for those who wish to embrace the skill
