Hi PMI Community! I’m Sarah Philbrick, and I work as a Product Manager at PMI with a focus on our learning offerings. As we go on this skill-building journey together, I’m excited to engage in meaningful conversations, explore trending topics, and learn from each other.
Reflecting on one such topic, GenAI and prompt engineering, I am interested to hear your perspective on commoditization vs. differentiation.
Will the widespread adoption of prompt engineering commoditize project management skills, or can it help PMs differentiate themselves and command higher value?
Thanks for initiating this discussion , for me, it gives more value and empower the functionality, as a projected managers we are always like to add value to our respective domains
CREATE Method for Complex Prompt Engineering, is like you teach and say to child how to do something, step by step , giving examples with precisely instruction to get the output needed

Prompt Engineering is the game changer. It will challenge the next set of ingenuity and bring about greater expansion in knowledge and technology.
With the new generation of generative AI portfolio/program/project manager and business analyst role "are dead" at least in the way they were originally defined. I think a good source to understand that are the two courses on generative AI delivered for free by the PMI, mainly if you see the 3 layer model.
I believe prompt engineering and incorporating the techniques will be vital to speeding up the projects and its success, however I don't believe it will replace anyone. I think of it as typing on a keyboard. I can use one, two or 10 fingers to type, using 10 is much quicker but I'm still in control of the end result! Add in some spellcheck, autocorrect and ... again same result, but quicker and more accurate. I believe prompt engineering takes this a step further.

The adoption of prompt engineering will give value in project management to those who have a good capacity to adapt in this disruptive world.
I agree with you Baba

I think, AI is a powerful tool and it can be used to authenticate and identify a more viable decision by the PMs. I do not think it will replace the role of PM and only experienced PM can justify the effectiveness of the outputs from AI tools.
