Hi PMI Community! I’m Sarah Philbrick, and I work as a Product Manager at PMI with a focus on our learning offerings. As we go on this skill-building journey together, I’m excited to engage in meaningful conversations, explore trending topics, and learn from each other.

Reflecting on one such topic, GenAI and prompt engineering, I am interested to hear your perspective on commoditization vs. differentiation.

Will the widespread adoption of prompt engineering commoditize project management skills, or can it help PMs differentiate themselves and command higher value?

Yes, No doubt. I've worked in a project one year ago which was fully ai dependent. Before generative ai era, these types of project took year or couple of year to finish and we finished that project within 3 months only and able to close full project in 6 months. Which didn't thought before. We completed the week's tasks in one day. It was amazing.

AI is another powerful tool to the PMs. It is the PMs who will use their experience to take help of AI to better project management
Some of the mundane tasks can be automated by AI, but, cannot make the PM less valuable
A PM who uses AI capability tools will become a better version of themselves

Prompt engineering will assist the project manager to be a more complete PM. Currently this will not replace the soft skills a PM should have.

Strong prompt engineering skills should be able to benefit project managers (PMs) in their project management profession. I think it is a skill PMs should learn.

I just wonder how it is going to work without a project manager.
The project team members self, or collaboratively will have to:
1. Ask AI (as the pm) what, how, where and by when to do all the required work.
2. Prompt engineering, with their limited project management knowledge.
3. Verification of the scope, cost and schedule plans.
4, Interpretation of project status and progress information.
5. Decide on action plan for rectification of the deviations from plans.
6. Identify scope changes imposed by the client.
And the list continue.
The last seems like the work of a human.

In my opinion there's no easy way out if you want to differentiate yourself and prove your value. Prompt engineering and AI should be considered as another tool to augment one's approach for efficiency and distinction. If used wisely combined with your own technical skills, soft skills and good communication it will definitely reap its benefits.

If we take a deep dive in AI, I think it will help us PM make a difference with time, cost and effectiveness in our reports and how we manage projects.

I do not believe that AI can replace natural intelligence of a human being project manager, but yes it will make a difference when an experienced project manager uses prompt engineering. I think about AI as a "artificial colleague" that I can discuss with him and get feedbak!

Prompt engineering won't make project managers obsolete. It's more like a powerful tool that can supercharge the skills PMs already have. Those who learn to use it well will be in higher demand because they'll be able to deliver even better results.
