Hi PMI Community! I’m Sarah Philbrick, and I work as a Product Manager at PMI with a focus on our learning offerings. As we go on this skill-building journey together, I’m excited to engage in meaningful conversations, explore trending topics, and learn from each other.

Reflecting on one such topic, GenAI and prompt engineering, I am interested to hear your perspective on commoditization vs. differentiation.

Will the widespread adoption of prompt engineering commoditize project management skills, or can it help PMs differentiate themselves and command higher value?

It is an indisputable fact that prompt engineering are and will continue to be a necessary and required tool for all Project Managers who want to achieve better results.

AI is an assistant at this stage and helps us work more efficiently and effectively. Those skilled in using it will have an advantage.

I have been using PMI Infinity since quite a while. This course on prompt engineering will definitely be of great value to give me more precise outputs adapted to the context. I foresee soon that with Gen AI this will get me more time devoted to project stakeholders to steer the project to greater success.

Your greatest value won't be knowing which buttons to press, but knowing what questions to ask. Those who master AI will be able to move beyond being mere task administrators and become true strategic leaders. Technology handles the heavy lifting, and you focus on what truly matters: people and the success of the business.

I think, it can PMs differentiate themselves and command higher value due to thiers backgrounds. So even if the adoption of prompt engineering is widespread, it doesn't commoditize project management skills.

É essencial essa evolução tanto como diferencial de atuação quanto de mercado com projetos que precisam acelerar e manter a qualidade. Há um publico alvo mais conectado com tempestividade na busca por valor agregado ao negócio.

The adoption of prompt engineering will bring value to many fields, while project managers will be more valued with additional trade or technological skills. Their field knowledge will help to improve the processing and accuracy of feeding the prompts verified information .

Onward and Forward, think prompt engineering will help PMs differentiate themselves and command higher value because even in the advanced world of AI/tech their will always be a need for deeper analysis and thinking which cannot be prompted by a computer. PMs will always have the advantage, even if its slight. If this same question was prompted I would be impressed to see this many unique responses to the question.

Project Management being a specialty occupation is a skill that relies heavily on an individuals experience and ability to plan and implement project tasks at miniscule level. Its only a PM who can really pinpoint the smallest margin of error in day to day project activities that can grow into a project bottleneck in coming future and impact project deliverables. A PM can only come to that conclusion when he clearly understands the scope, the end user deliverable expectations and the capability of the tools and resource engaged on a day to day basis, something that AI cannot predict. Also, lets not forget the fact that communication being a strong suite of humans, we cater the delivery of messaging good/bad news to client sponsors and stakeholders after carefully knowing their personas, offering corrective solutions to ensure we gain stakeholder confidence in delivery of final solution. Hence i concur, prompt engineering is an additional armour at a PMs disposal that will help the PM get to a conclusion and provide supporting information towards a specific situation during the project, with the final decision being in the PMs hands whether that information received is credible and can be presented.
