Hi PMI Community! I’m Sarah Philbrick, and I work as a Product Manager at PMI with a focus on our learning offerings. As we go on this skill-building journey together, I’m excited to engage in meaningful conversations, explore trending topics, and learn from each other.

Reflecting on one such topic, GenAI and prompt engineering, I am interested to hear your perspective on commoditization vs. differentiation.

Will the widespread adoption of prompt engineering commoditize project management skills, or can it help PMs differentiate themselves and command higher value?

After a deeper understanding of AI, I believe it´s a phenomenal tool for Project Managers, as it helps to quickly execute administrative/housekeeping tasks, while still being capable of creating more elaborate results that require analysis.

Prompt engineering and AI are simply tools for the profession. The skills that PM's gain through repeated projects in their specific field or industry will help differentiate them in that field. So while 'basic' project management can be commoditized, the expertise of an experienced PM provides the human in the loop that clients, CEOs, etc. require.

I don't think Generative AI will obviate the role of an informed and thoughtful PM. It may accelerate the execution of some tasks. I'll also note that Generative AI has a fundamental flaw—it is trained on data that already exists. In theory this makes it ineffective at developing new ideas. There's that and it requires a seasoned PM to review the output and determine how or where to apply it.

Will the widespread adoption of prompt engineering commoditize project management skills? to a certain degree yes. There will be topics, subjects, areas of concern, reports that can be addressed by off-the-shelf solutions and off the shelf solutions facilitate quick deployment/responses of our day to day activities. an off the shelf tool standardized the discussion and facilitates discussions becuase it makes thing much more familiar to a larger audience.

what cannot be changed is, a PM's analytical mind, a PM's ability to plan, direct both tactical and strategic, decision making.

My take is "It will help differentiate themselves and command higher value". AI is again a tool (much smarter) which can provide options and suggestions OR offload the work to an extent. But the decision maker is still the Project Manager. It is impossible that a person without any project management experience can reply completely on AI-Project Manager, and use them for a successful outcome of the project.

I tihink that the Generative AI gives us a lot of opportunities to be more productive.

I expect that AI tools will significantly enhance productivity, leaving more time for PMs to apply critical thinking and foster stronger working relationships. There may be some impact on the need for junior resources to help with things such as meeting notes, given the wide array of tools such as Otter.

Don´t think the PM role will disappear. The human is always a necessity, e.g. AI Hallucinations.
