Hi PMI Community! I’m Sarah Philbrick, and I work as a Product Manager at PMI with a focus on our learning offerings. As we go on this skill-building journey together, I’m excited to engage in meaningful conversations, explore trending topics, and learn from each other.

Reflecting on one such topic, GenAI and prompt engineering, I am interested to hear your perspective on commoditization vs. differentiation.

Will the widespread adoption of prompt engineering commoditize project management skills, or can it help PMs differentiate themselves and command higher value?

Generative AI is an additional tool that can be used to quickly create presentations, analyze data, and support decisions related to budget, ROI, risks, and other business aspects.

It represents a way to work more proactively and efficiently, enabling you to take full advantage of the tools available to you.

I believe it is the PMO’s responsibility to provide the necessary knowledge and training to project managers on AI integration and prompt engineering. This will help streamline the overall process and improve efficiency.

Additionally, sharing practical scenarios and lessons learned would further support effective adoption.

The potential of GenAI in project management is only as strong as the responsibility of those who operate it. Mastering Prompt Engineering is now an essential technical skill, but understanding the implications of handling confidential data is a fundamental ethical obligation.
It's not just about using AI faster; it's about using it more securely and strategically. Data integrity is non-negotiable.

Absolutely, prompting wisely while considering what may be deemed confidential and sensitive information shows good governance and ethical responsibility.

The course content indicate that this can replace or complement competent lower level jobs in project team like project admin, project officers who help the PM. They seem to be great tool and it will definitely increase the productivity of the team. The organisations must ensure that they have reliable source of data first before rushing into implementation.

Prompt engineering will commoditize basic Project Management tasks but it will also enhance the value of project manager's with advanced use of AI.

The concern makes sense, and it’s something many people are thinking about. Still, even with deep involvement in AI, it seems clear that we are not close to a stage where AI can completely take over the role of human project managers. Project management involves handling complex situations, making nuanced decisions, and understanding people—areas where human judgment remains essential. The ability to reason, adapt, and connect on a human level cannot easily be replicated. Unless we reach a future where humans rely entirely on AI for thinking and decision-making, human project managers will continue to play a critical role that technology alone cannot fully replace.

With the widespread use of prompt engineering, the PM are able to add more value to the work they do by leveraging Gen AI to focus on what it can do while giving more time and attention to GenAI cannot do. This promotes efficiency and effectiveness

AI is a powerful assistant, not a project owner.
It increases PM productivity—but judgment, accountability, and trust remain human responsibilities.

Hi, I am Wayne and working through the AI Prompt Engineering course.

Although I have been using ChatGPT and CoPilot for a couple of years now, I think that defining the correct prompt has become a key and necessary skill set. I have noticed performance improvements, not only in my own work, but also seeing it in various project team's performance improvement.

I think what will be challenging is that our customers and business stakeholders will start to expect much higher AI-enabled productivity and faster project execution as the new normal.

So, in order to keep relevant, project professionals must become AI tool literate.
