Hi PMI Community! I’m Sarah Philbrick, and I work as a Product Manager at PMI with a focus on our learning offerings. As we go on this skill-building journey together, I’m excited to engage in meaningful conversations, explore trending topics, and learn from each other.

Reflecting on one such topic, GenAI and prompt engineering, I am interested to hear your perspective on commoditization vs. differentiation.

Will the widespread adoption of prompt engineering commoditize project management skills, or can it help PMs differentiate themselves and command higher value?

I don't see AI as a replacement for my role, but as a high-powered co-pilot. It handles the data-heavy lifting and the routine 'busywork' that used to consume my day, giving me the clarity and speed to be a more effective leader. By letting AI manage the information, I can focus on the interpretation—using my experience to make the nuanced, human-led decisions that a machine simply cannot.

prompt engineering will not commoditize strong project managers—it will expose weak ones and amplify excellent ones. Prompt engineering makes certain mechanical PM activities cheaper and faster. Prompt engineering shifts value away from doing toward deciding.

I have used few tools like Loveable, Claude and similar others and prepared webpages in minutes which interact with your Project financial and progress data in excel or other similar data as a input and gives you a visual data representation over project timeline which help make right decision and benchmarking in overall business objectives of the project.

I believe the adoption of AI by Project managers enables them to carry out their tasks faster and more efficiently.

Widespread adoption of prompt engineering will not commoditize project management—it will reward PMs who combine domain depth with AI fluency.
It elevates PMs from task orchestrators to strategic sense‑makers, improving decision quality, speed, and stakeholder alignment.
Used well, prompt engineering becomes a new lever for thought leadership, differentiation, and higher value creation in global project management.

I believe the role of Project Manager will need to be redefined. With Gen AI, different approaches are being used for the delivery of projects and programs. Currently, the prevailing view is that it will empower project managers. However, down the line, and with new advances, it remains unclear what parts of project management will be left for the human—affection management being a key example. From my own perspective, AI will not be replacing us in that area.

h1The widespread adoption of prompt engineering can help PMs differentiate themselves but only if using the right AI tools and using them appropriately. Blind trust in an AI tool to completely do the job of a PM is unrealistic./h1

Adopting GenAI /Prompt Engineering would be a new way of working and it can just augment the skilled project managers who combine technical knowledge, soft skills, and strategic thinking in their dealings

AI is here to change everything. Not all jobs will disappear, but all of them will change.

Project Management is no exception. Many of our current duties will be executed by AI in an accurate and efficient way. However, core Project Management skills cannot be replaced by AI, at least for now.

Therefore, I believe we should redefine the value we are genuinely able to provide in certain tasks and move away from those that have already been commoditized by AI.

I like the verification method taught in this course. It's highly important to verify AI is giving you the right response. I work with science and often use AI to verify scientific papers. I will use the ideas given in this course from now on.
