Hi PMI Community! I’m Sarah Philbrick, and I work as a Product Manager at PMI with a focus on our learning offerings. As we go on this skill-building journey together, I’m excited to engage in meaningful conversations, explore trending topics, and learn from each other.

Reflecting on one such topic, GenAI and prompt engineering, I am interested to hear your perspective on commoditization vs. differentiation.

Will the widespread adoption of prompt engineering commoditize project management skills, or can it help PMs differentiate themselves and command higher value?

Prompt Engineering can automate many repetitive tasks leaving the project manager to focus on more complex problems. In that way their value to the organization is increased. However, there is still a major learning curve before this technique yields productive results.

Prompt engineering will have a great benefit if you exchange with your LLM using the CREATE Method like if you are a manager asking a task to your team member and precising all the details that he should know to do his task properly...

Prompt engineering can definitely streamline basic tasks, but it also lets PMs stand out by enhancing workflows and decision-making. It's all about using these tools to bring more value and work smarter together

Judging by the current adaptability rate of PMs to AI and prompt engineering, I strongly believe that AI is more of a means PMs can make use of to optimize and generate better outcomes.

With the new generation of generative AI portfolio/program/project manager and business analyst role "are dead" at least in the way they were originally defined. I think a good source to understand that are the two courses on generative AI delivered for free by the PMI, mainly if you see the 3 layer model.
it will absolutely help but as I understand whatever measured possible to be controlled, I mean someone experienced about LLM together with specialized engineers could make difference melting with AI.

Project management skills will not be commoditized by the widespread adoption of prompt engineering itself.

The difference, for better or worse, will be defined by the level of expertise with which the project manager is able to communicate with the AI.
Prompt engineering is a means, not an end, on the path to excellence in project management.
Those who know how to extract the best from AI through prompt engineering have a much greater chance of standing out in these new times.
That's why I'm here to enhance such kind of skill!!!

i see Prompt Engineering is going to help Managers to take right information ( with reduction of any manual activity ) and improves for taking decision. It also helps managers or BA who does not have knowledge or may not required to learn new reporting tools instead we can use prompt engineering to get meaningful outputs.

Interacting with GenAI chatbots like Infinity is like having a conversation with a wise person in Project Management. And the language of communication is Prompt Engineering. Hence, you get a best answer if you ask a best question and becoming as wiser as Infinity. So definitely, it adds value and accelerates the growth.

I've explored many aspects of Gen AI and am highly impressed by its potential to support project management. I believe it will make the role of a Project Manager significantly easier and more efficient by providing valuable insights that can drive better decision-making. Additionally, Gen AI will enhance team members' experiences by simplifying their tasks and improving overall productivity.
