Will the widespread adoption of prompt engineering commoditize project management skills, or can it help PMs differentiate themselves and command higher value?

Hi PMI Community! I’m Sarah Philbrick, and I work as a Product Manager at PMI with a focus on our learning offerings. As we go on this skill-building journey together, I’m excited to engage in meaningful conversations, explore trending topics, and learn from each other.
Reflecting on one such topic, GenAI and prompt engineering, I am interested to hear your perspective on commoditization vs. differentiation.
Will the widespread adoption of prompt engineering commoditize project management skills, or can it help PMs differentiate themselves and command higher value?

AI is a solution to optimize generation of more & more complex deliverables in less & less time. However, there is no AI that can convince a team of developers and testers, or electricians and quality managers to work more closely with each other, hearing and smoothing out each team's concerns, differences and objectives. THAT is true project management. AI is for deliverables management. I think the real jobs that it endangers is the Business Analyst and Project Administrator, who do a lot of deliverables development work, and are traditional Junior PM roles.
It will help PMs differentiate themselves and command higher value considering the benefit of Al. Saving Changes...

A recent webinar discussed the future of AI in Project Management and the possibility of AI replacing the Project Manager. I agree that AI is a powerful tool to augment the quality of PM work rather than replace the PM. Just as a PM must have experience to be most effective, the best use of AI will be by those who have the experience to effectively tap this resource. AI as a tool will reinforce the necessity of PMs while improving the quality of the profession. Saving Changes...

I have recently studied about AI and how it works. I think that AI will be a great ally for PMs to obtain information in less time, this will allow PMs to spend their time on important things about the project. For example, communication with internal and external stakeholders. Also, sensitivity and common sense are things that AI doesn't have yet, but PMs do. Saving Changes...
While prompt engineering may streamline certain aspects of project management, skilled project managers who combine technical knowledge, soft skills, and strategic thinking could be continue to command higher value.
👍🏾Sure! GenAI is a tool that provides valuable assistance to the PM to accomplish some repetitive tasks quickly and earn more free time to focus on other critical tasks that require the PM's special skills to get done. GenAI is a great companion and not a competition, especially given the need for evaluation and review of AI's output from the prompts given it, due to the possibility of errors from the AI. Hence, the buck stops at the PM's table on the contents produced by AI. That responsibility is still a given to the PM for the now. Saving Changes...

I think that the widespread adoption of prompt engineering is unlikely to commoditize project management skills. Instead, it will serve as a helper for PMs. It will help PMs to streamline their workflows and also enhance decision-making. Saving Changes...

Prompt engineering in project management is an emerging and valuable approach that leverages the power of AI to optimize decision-making and streamline processes. By crafting precise and effective prompts, project managers can better utilize AI tools to predict potential risks, allocate resources efficiently, and enhance team communication. This method not only improves the accuracy and relevance of AI-generated insights but also empowers project managers to make more informed decisions, ultimately leading to more successful project outcomes. As AI continues to evolve, prompt engineering is likely to become an essential skill in the project management toolkit. Saving Changes...

I'm just dipping my toe in GenAI, and see it's utility as an advisor and researcher to compile and synthesize vast volumes of available content. This brings great utility, but still must be evaluated and tailored by somebody with other information outside the training set. This may constitute audience biases and preferences, proprietary/confidential data, and context not available to the LLM. Saving Changes...
