Hi PMI Community! I’m Sarah Philbrick, and I work as a Product Manager at PMI with a focus on our learning offerings. As we go on this skill-building journey together, I’m excited to engage in meaningful conversations, explore trending topics, and learn from each other.
Reflecting on one such topic, GenAI and prompt engineering, I am interested to hear your perspective on commoditization vs. differentiation.
Will the widespread adoption of prompt engineering commoditize project management skills, or can it help PMs differentiate themselves and command higher value?

I believe that as Large Language Models (LLMs) become more advanced, there is a strong likelihood that certain simple tasks will quickly become commoditized. However, complex tasks will continue to demand the expertise of experienced Project Managers (PMs). For instance, fine-tuning in Prompt Engineering necessitates a certain level of PM skills, particularly in understanding what elements to incorporate into the prompts. This presents an opportunity for PMs to differentiate themselves and command higher value in their roles. Saving Changes...

The fact that there is always a human element to verify some of the outputs means that the two will co-exist in the long run. There may be elements of commoditization, but the status quo will always be tilting the scales in its favour. Saving Changes...

I have always believed that every project/program/portfolio management essentially entail leading and enabling people to be their better version and rest gets taken care of. There is no doubt that Generative AI and Prompt engineering have emerged as a game changer in many facets including management practices and will definitely bring changes in the way of working. However, until we have humans at the core of the eco-system, AI will always remain as a companion rather than posing a threat to replace humans. When AI will take over many of the mundane tasks and grow in future to take up more strategic tasks, humans will find other jobs to do. Humans have been known for the survival instinct, isnt' it? The rise of prompt engineering is reshaping the project management landscape, and I see it as a tremendous opportunity rather than a threat. It's a game-changer for us project managers. By embracing this technology, we can enhance our capabilities, focus on strategic initiatives, and lead projects with greater impact. This evolution allows us to command higher value and redefine our role in a world increasingly driven by AI.
By staying ahead of these changes and focusing on continuous learning and strategic insights, we can turn potential challenges into opportunities for growth and leadership, making ourselves indispensable in the process.
Considering that it is a tool, the result must be interpreted with criteria and validated by a specialist. Given the above, I think that this resource is valuable for decision making, knowing the status of the project. The area in which I work is mainly related to the construction of hospitals, where a lot of information is handled, which is not always fully utilized. Saving Changes...

As with any technological advancement throughout human history, inventions and innovations have always aimed to make work easier for people. AI prompt engineering is no exception—it's a tool designed to simplify the generation of text. However, project managers and team members must still possess the ability to understand and discuss the content generated. In my view, AI cannot replace project managers or team members...at least not yet! Saving Changes...
With the new generation of generative AI portfolio/program/project manager and business analyst role "are dead" at least in the way they were originally defined. I think a good source to understand that are the two courses on generative AI delivered for free by the PMI, mainly if you see the 3 layer model.
I think AI is here to help, suggest and improve decisions for Project Managers , data analysts. There is no way that we can run a project or analyse data only by AI without an Official. Saving Changes...

While prompt engineering has the potential to commoditize certain aspects of project management, it also offers PMs the chance to elevate their roles. By embracing AI and focusing on strategic, high-value tasks, PMs can differentiate themselves and command higher value in the marketplace. Some opportunities PMs can embrace are enhanced decision making, focusing on strategic leadership, adaptability and learning, and customization and personalization to fit specific and/or unique project needs.
