Hi PMI Community! I’m Sarah Philbrick, and I work as a Product Manager at PMI with a focus on our learning offerings. As we go on this skill-building journey together, I’m excited to engage in meaningful conversations, explore trending topics, and learn from each other.

Reflecting on one such topic, GenAI and prompt engineering, I am interested to hear your perspective on commoditization vs. differentiation.

Will the widespread adoption of prompt engineering commoditize project management skills, or can it help PMs differentiate themselves and command higher value?

Generative AI tools will increase the efficiency and effectiveness of the project managers role. The challenge lies in the trust we hold for Prompt Engineering and the way we interact with such tools.Real time dashboards on the project KPI'S are to be revolutionary aspects that will augment to project managers tasks.

I believe the adoption of Generative AI and Prompt Engineering will give false confidence to amateur and upstart project managers. It will occasionally work, but as they apply it, the lack of depth of experience and understanding of context will become evident in the failure of more and more projects. Therefore, I think Generative AI and Prompt Engineering will enhance and differentiate good Project Managers, and "separate the wheat from the chaff".

Restrictng the answer to my awareness about the software industry.

Would perceive Prompt Engineering as the new 'must-have' skillset to be acquired across all disciplines than only being restricted to program management. The more clever, hands-on and insightful an individual gets on Prompt Engineering, s/he opens doors to democratised wide open foundational skillset choices and break the vertical silos within a value-stream of delivery process.

Essentially - what I mean is that the 'master-skillset' of prompt engineering with right combination of the AI Toools will 'democratize' the each function and layer - program management, software development, software testing and deployment as long as the models have access to the right volume and quality of data. However, these individual functions will not 'commoditize'.

We will always need foundational subject matter experts who are conceptually strong in each functional vertical to ensure a deep learning for AI models, however now with expertise in GenAI + Prompt Engineering + Data.

The two dimensions of foundational expertise will continue to be a mandatory must - First: foundational inputs to develop and govern the GenAI solutions within your organization (through our generation at the least :) ); Second: Validating and governing the outcomes of an AI solution.

Would you agree?

Change is inevitable. as AI is evolving, everybody wants t o get into that as it is going disrupt the market. It is important to understand this change, accept it and evolve ourselves to the next level with this new paradigm shift and utlize the technological growth as strength.

Having Gen AI will definitely assist when comes to review and discuss for simple and quick solutions. The actual problems in Project Management is unique and influenced by different factors. Hence, the knowledge and experience of handling problems needs to be considered carefully and not out coming up with Gen AI solutions by Project Managers. The AI technically sounds pretty good but it’s usefulness needs to be verified consistently.

The adoption of AI will boost PMs, Project teams' productivity which shall increase the performance of project organisations. This is a need for all PMs to distinguish themselves in the practice especially for PMs operating in multiple fields/industries.

Thanks for your question, Sarah

Just as access to Google doesn't make everyone a scholar, widespread adoption of prompt engineering shouldn't pose any threat to any diligent project management professional.

Going beyond the hype, how exactly will someone using prompt engineering commoditize project management skills?

For sure, prompt engineering can help in streamlining certain repetitive tasks on projects. But being good at prompt engineering doesn't necessarily equate to project success. There are people skills and soft skills that will always keep industrious professionals relevant.

Thanks again for sharing. Looking forward to hear more contributions on this.
Thoroughly agree. GenAI and prompt engineering can help with repetitive tasks and Project Managers should absolutely learn and leverage these new tools to add value to their projects and make their role easier. However, soft skills are essential for project success. People work on projects, and teams and stakeholders need to be engaged, communicated to and managed and this is where the PM comes in.

I am a Principal/Director at Microsoft and Gen AI prompting skills provide a differentiation from those without the skills. Gen AI will not over take the role of PMs but provide enhancement for added additional skill to the tool kit.
