Hi PMI Community! I’m Sarah Philbrick, and I work as a Product Manager at PMI with a focus on our learning offerings. As we go on this skill-building journey together, I’m excited to engage in meaningful conversations, explore trending topics, and learn from each other.

Reflecting on one such topic, GenAI and prompt engineering, I am interested to hear your perspective on commoditization vs. differentiation.

Will the widespread adoption of prompt engineering commoditize project management skills, or can it help PMs differentiate themselves and command higher value?

The widespread adoption of prompt engineering has the potential to commoditize certain project management skills, but it also offers opportunities for project managers to differentiate themselves and increase their value. Those who can strategically integrate AI into their workflows, focus on high-level leadership, and drive innovation will likely see their roles enhanced rather than diminished.

Prompt engineering and AI tools might automate routine project management tasks and potentially replace some aspects of human involvement. However, they also present opportunities for PMs to differentiate themselves by enhancing decision-making, tackling complex challenges, and leveraging data-driven insights. Those who adapt by mastering these technologies and focusing on strategic, personalized, and high-value elements of their role can maintain their relevance and command higher value, even as some tasks become automated. Given these factors, a rough estimate could range from 10 to 30 years for AI to potentially handle many aspects of project management autonomously. However, it's likely that even with advanced AI, human project managers will continue to play a crucial role in many areas due to their ability to handle complex, nuanced, and interpersonal aspects of projects. Created by GenAI.

AI is another powerful tool to the PMs. It is the PMs who will use their experience to take help of AI to better project management
Some of the mundane tasks can be automated by AI, but, cannot make the PM less valuable
A PM who uses AI capability tools will become a better version of themselves
You are right

The adoption of AI will add value to the project manager in the sense that you will have access to a wide variety of information to compare and help you gain better understanding in your domain. it enhances your experience.

While prompt engineering may streamline certain aspects of project management, skilled project managers who combine technical knowledge, soft skills, and strategic thinking could be continue to command higher value.
Totally agree!

MAn in the midde is unavoidable, lot of confusion can be put into scene by hallucinated data or outputs., never take aoutput as safe and as a law , have your colleagues to checlk and discus the quality of the optput and send your new prompts to fine tune the response until humans accept the output
See thsi simplechat gpt output to the question of this reel :

Conclusion

Prompt engineering could commoditize certain routine aspects of project management, but it also presents opportunities for PMs to differentiate themselves by focusing on higher-value activities. PMs who embrace these tools and shift their focus to strategic, creative, and human-centric roles are likely to command higher value and stand out in the field.

I strongly believe that the advent of Gen AI will not outrightly replaced the informed Project Managers but rather empower them to function optimally. Just keep up the pace of the technological evolutions and as Project Managers, we will always be relevant and adding value to our respective domains.
I agree.

I believe that project management skills cannot be commoditized, as the experience and technical knowledge of the project manager is required to be able to take advantage of and validate the results that AI produces from the instructions we provide.

I also believe that AI and instructional engineering can help PMs manage their project more quickly and effectively by providing them with access to a vast library of related knowledge, immediately and on demand, that can be used to solve problems, prepare relevant information for the project, suggest courses of action or best practices.

Therefore, in my opinion, instructional engineering is already changing the world of project management and the way PMs work for the good of the profession.

Hi Sarah and PMI Community,

I agree that embracing GenAI and prompt engineering is crucial. Those who master these tools can offer unique insights and solutions, enhancing their professional value. PMs who leverage these tools will enhance efficiency and stand out, while those who resist may fall behind. In my view, adapting to AI improves productivity and adds value and differentiation in the industry.

Best regards,
Daniel S.
