Hi PMI Community! I’m Sarah Philbrick, and I work as a Product Manager at PMI with a focus on our learning offerings. As we go on this skill-building journey together, I’m excited to engage in meaningful conversations, explore trending topics, and learn from each other.

Reflecting on one such topic, GenAI and prompt engineering, I am interested to hear your perspective on commoditization vs. differentiation.

Will the widespread adoption of prompt engineering commoditize project management skills, or can it help PMs differentiate themselves and command higher value?

Prompt engineering is both a skill and a toolset to be learned and acquired. It will aid project managers in their professional roles. The widespread adoption of it is highly unlikely to commoditize project management skills. Instead, it should help PMs differentiate themselves and command the deserved values provided human-centered prompt engineering or LLM models are being adopted, adapted and assimilated and put into purpose-driven projects.

Hi PMI Community,

I'm Piyush John, a PMO head with over 20 years of experience in various roles, including Change & Transformation. I'd like to share my thoughts on the impact of prompt engineering on project management.

While prompt engineering is indeed a powerful tool, I believe it will complement rather than commoditize project management skills. Here's why:

1. Enhanced Efficiency: Prompt engineering can streamline routine tasks, allowing PMs to focus on high-value activities that require human judgment and emotional intelligence.

2. Data-Driven Insights: PMs who master prompt engineering can extract valuable insights from project data, leading to more informed decision-making and risk management.

3. Customized Solutions: Skilled PMs can use prompt engineering to tailor AI outputs to specific project needs, creating unique solutions that set them apart.

4. Stakeholder Management: While AI can generate reports, the ability to communicate effectively with stakeholders and manage expectations remains a crucial human skill.

5. Adaptability: PMs who embrace prompt engineering demonstrate their ability to evolve with technology, a valuable trait in our rapidly changing industry.

6. Complex Problem Solving: AI can provide options, but navigating complex, nuanced project challenges still requires human expertise and intuition.

7. Ethical Considerations: PMs play a vital role in ensuring AI is used responsibly within projects, addressing concerns about bias and data privacy.

To differentiate themselves, PMs should:

1. Develop prompt engineering skills alongside traditional PM competencies.
2. Focus on areas where human skills shine: leadership, conflict resolution, and strategic thinking.
3. Use AI to augment their capabilities, not replace them.
4. Stay updated on AI advancements and their potential applications in project management.

In conclusion, prompt engineering offers an opportunity for PMs to elevate their value by combining technological proficiency with irreplaceable human skills. Those who adapt will likely command higher value in the market, as they'll be equipped to lead projects in an AI-enhanced landscape while maintaining the human touch essential for project success.
Dear John, your response sounds precise and thorough. The typical PM is going to be reframed with the advent of AI.

Similar to other enabling technologies, adoption of LLM will increase giving us an opportunity to add another skill to our tool kit. Commoditization as use of LLMs move from niche to general users, will also be accompanied by differentiation for those who can obtain the most relevant answers from the LLMs.

I believe that the widespread adoption of prompt engineering will help PMs differentiate themselves and command higher value, if they become experts in asking the right questions.

The adoption of prompt engineering will be a necessary skills set for anyone. I see AI as a great tool to increase the value of project managers. Like many of you stated, Gen AI is helping us to be more productive and effective. We are not at a point where we can be 100% replaced. What I do see is the need to use our analytical skills and maybe specialize in an industry or function.

With the new generation of generative AI portfolio/program/project manager and business analyst role "are dead" at least in the way they were originally defined. I think a good source to understand that are the two courses on generative AI delivered for free by the PMI, mainly if you see the 3 layer model.
I think PMI is way ahead of the change. My senior is not one bit interested in LLMs and my accelerated efficiency. And I don´t think he is an exception.

Prompt engineering, in my opinion, will enhance rather than commercialize project management abilities. What excellent prompt engineering enables PMs to do:
The foundation of this subject is based on the main ideas: that the quantity and quality of prompts a team gets determines the performance of a PM; traditional knowledge maintains...
- Make better decisions by identifying trends and data.
- Improve teamwork and communication by producing clear documentation and encouraging teamwork. However, it also aids in resource allocation optimization through trend analysis and historical data.
- Risk mitigation refers to the steps to lessen the possibility of a risk event and/or its possible consequences.

Soon-to-be-available engineering abilities enable PMs to generate innovative solutions, boost productivity, and add greater value.

I think that technology can make our job as PM much easier in some ways, it can even make us see things that we have left aside or have not taken into account. But in the end it is that, a help, more or less valuable as long as we know how to use it correctly, but above all ethically.

I think AI will diversify PMs, considering the vast areas it can be used for.
