Will the widespread adoption of prompt engineering commoditize project management skills, or can it help PMs differentiate themselves and command higher value?

Hi PMI Community! I’m Sarah Philbrick, and I work as a Product Manager at PMI with a focus on our learning offerings. As we go on this skill-building journey together, I’m excited to engage in meaningful conversations, explore trending topics, and learn from each other.
Reflecting on one such topic, GenAI and prompt engineering, I am interested to hear your perspective on commoditization vs. differentiation.
Will the widespread adoption of prompt engineering commoditize project management skills, or can it help PMs differentiate themselves and command higher value?

While prompt engineering may streamline certain aspects of project management, skilled project managers who combine technical knowledge, soft skills, and strategic thinking could be continue to command higher value.
Completely agree with this observation. No AI tool can replace the human consciousness and visioning skills. Also, only a human can make personal contact with another human. Therefore, empathy, respect, understanding, etc. will always remain outside the bounds of AI. PMs who possess such soft skills would always command greater respect and success. Saving Changes...

I prefer to call AI Augmented Intelligence and not Artificial Intelligence, since machine can never mimic human intelligence, which is connected to human consciousness.
Having said this, I fully subscribe to the use of AI tools including prompt engineering to enhance my own intelligence. I can use my intelligence more in the area of innovation and creativity rather than repetitive tasks based on certain pattern or formula which can be better handled by AI. Saving Changes...

With the new generation of generative AI portfolio/program/project manager and business analyst role "are dead" at least in the way they were originally defined. I think a good source to understand that are the two courses on generative AI delivered for free by the PMI, mainly if you see the 3 layer model.
Yes, the earlier roles may need a re-jig to incorporate the value addition from AI, and the new roles may reflect newer responsibilities based on their interactions with AI. Saving Changes...
Hi Sarah,
Prompt engineering will comoditize certain repetitive or known tasks, and could impact differently to different groups of PMs. Young PMs could gain from the responses of promts by helping them to fill gaps in knowledge that could only be acquired before with experience. Seasoned PMs will be helped by prompt engineering by making sure that no details have been missed. The most dangerous results, I think, can be caused by younger PMs taking for granted hallucinations of LLMs. Saving Changes...
The adoption of prompt engineering will give value in project management to those who have a good capacity to adapt in this disruptive world.
I totally agree with you. Saving Changes...

Hi Sarah,
I believe it is a challenge for PMs to remain relevant in today's times without falling into the temptation of commercialization, and an opportunity to gain greater value from their skills. Saving Changes...

I agree with the industry general consensus that Gen AI will serve to augment and/or enhance the a) comprehensiveness and b) speed of administrative/documentation tasks required of PMs in the near future. That said, it remains to be seen as to the ramifications and growing capabilities of AI Agents trained specifically for industry-specific autonomous work without human intervention as replacements to PMs with real-world experience.

I fully agree with you Robert. I’ve seen job offers from companies that are hiring industry-experts to train their AI systems on industry related themes, so I think that’s the way to go, the next step to enhance the AI models.
As per me, the Gen AI and Prompt Engineering are true assistants to the Project Managers. They never replace the Humans in Project Management. Let's try to adopt and explore Gen AI and Prompt Engineering in refining our work better and better with ease. Saving Changes...
