Hi PMI Community! I’m Sarah Philbrick, and I work as a Product Manager at PMI with a focus on our learning offerings. As we go on this skill-building journey together, I’m excited to engage in meaningful conversations, explore trending topics, and learn from each other.

Reflecting on one such topic, GenAI and prompt engineering, I am interested to hear your perspective on commoditization vs. differentiation.

Will the widespread adoption of prompt engineering commoditize project management skills, or can it help PMs differentiate themselves and command higher value?

Hi Sarah

I believe that the widespread adoption of prompt engineering could have a dual impact on project management skills. On one hand, it might lead to commoditization, where the ease of using AI tools for generating responses or solutions could reduce the perceived value of project management skills.

On the other hand, prompt engineering presents an opportunity for project managers to differentiate themselves. By leveraging AI creatively and integrating their personal expertise and analytical skills, project managers can stand out. Using AI to enhance project management strategies, predict risks, and analyze data can increase a project manager's value and demand in the market.

So, I think success in this area depends on how project managers integrate their skills with AI tools and use them to enhance their capabilities and distinguish themselves in their field.

Regarding project managers (PM) and artificial intelligence (Ai) - Empathy, respect, appreciation, and patience are not commodities and they are necessary traits for a good communicator. One of fundamental skills of a PM is communication and Ai can only be as good as the PM communicating with it.

While prompt engineering may streamline certain aspects of project management, skilled project managers who combine technical knowledge, soft skills, and strategic thinking could be continue to command higher value.
I second that

GenIA is undoubtedly a great tool that helps us do things much faster, however the results are not definitive,
I think we still need to make an intervention on our part to complement or give it the final touch.
We as project managers still have the experience, the knowledge of business strategies and the intelligence which I believe will continue to make a difference.

Tools are meant to be wielded, and skill is demonstrated in the fine use of those tools. Prompt engineering is a potential tool to use to enhance many project aspects, from product documentation, to simplified but reliable metric analysis. PMs should learn the art of prompt engineering, as a test of personal knowledge of the project and its needs if nothing else.

Both commoditization and differentiation to an extent. Let me explain that statement of mine. I hope all of us agree that "Humans with AI will replace humans without AI in the days to come instead of AI replacing humans" so everyone will start using some tools and Gen AI will get commoditized at some point of time in the future. Differentiation can exist depending on the use cases, for example a leader who's great at prompts and using context (which Gen AI need to improve a lot) will be better than a leader who blindly trusts Gen AI and not so great at prompts and In-context.

As others have correctly said, automating routine tasks and improving decision making through AI-driven insights are very useful, but any personal increase in value for PM's will still be tied to core skills such as strategic planning, leadership and stakeholder management.

PM's who leverage Generative AI tools can differentiate themselves through the integration of the tolls and focusing on those higher-level tasks such as stakeholder engagement and figuring out if a risk is really an opportunity.

Prompt engineering may standardize some aspects of project management but it also offers PMs opportunities to enhance their roles. By leveraging these tools to add strategic value PM's can focus on complex problem-solving and excel in interpersonal aspects. Project Management Professional's can differentiate themselves and potentially command higher value. Adapting to these changes will be key to thriving in the evolving landscape.

PMs who can effectively leverage prompt engineering will have a significant advantage over those who cannot. By using LLMs to automate routine tasks and generate new insights, PMs can focus on higher-level strategic thinking, problem-solving, and relationship building. This will enable them to command higher value and differentiate themselves in the market.
In conclusion, prompt engineering is not a threat to project management skills; rather, it is a tool that can enhance and differentiate them. By mastering prompt engineering, PMs can become more effective, strategic, and valuable to their organizations.

I believe that AI is a good tool to speed up more bureaucratic work. So the PM can better focus on communication and interaction with people. That is what AI cannot do.
