Hi PMI Community! I’m Sarah Philbrick, and I work as a Product Manager at PMI with a focus on our learning offerings. As we go on this skill-building journey together, I’m excited to engage in meaningful conversations, explore trending topics, and learn from each other.

Reflecting on one such topic, GenAI and prompt engineering, I am interested to hear your perspective on commoditization vs. differentiation.

Will the widespread adoption of prompt engineering commoditize project management skills, or can it help PMs differentiate themselves and command higher value?

I do not think this will commoditize project management skills any more than I think access and adoption to any PM tool can replace the attributes necessary to manage a successful project. It is a tool, yet powerful, it is only a driver in the toolbox. To my knowledge a driver has limitations of its own. A successful PM will have an entire toolbox of skills, not show up with one driver.

It will generate a mix of both. Or better yet, a new breed of PMs.

In my opinion, prompt engineering is a valuable skill that can set project managers apart and enhance their ability to deliver value. By leveraging it effectively, PMs can automate routine tasks, streamline communication, and improve decision-making processes, leading to more efficient project management. However, it's crucial to apply this tool wisely and with discernment, ensuring it complements human oversight and strategic thinking.

If prompt engineering is used efficiently and ethically as a tool to facilitate project delivery, then it'll definitely be a powerful commodity which will be in high demand in the near future.

However, in recent times where one observes a greater reliance on AI to even draft a simple e-mail, then one wonders if AI hasn't already taken over a crucial human component.

AI is undeniably a powerful enabler that can significantly enhance your work when used effectively. Exceptional PMs recognize this and leverage AI to stay ahead, knowing it will elevate the quality and efficiency of their work.

I am Paola Garzón, I started as a team member for several industry projects 20 years ago and as a project director for the last 10 years, from my perspective I truly believe in the diferentiation and higher value stream, considering the high amount of time PM must dedicate to operative tasks, due to resource restrictions, the help IA tools provide are a breeze of fresh air. In my case AI has provided framework and ideas for detailed deliverables or internal documents generation, which for me is a huge help, allowing me to have time to focus on strategic matters.

The world is evolving rapidly especially with the invention of Generative AI. It is important to upskill, adapt and take advantage of these great tools to be more effective at what we do.
I enjoyed the prompt engineering training and the practical applications shared. Already testing out the RTF and CREATE formulas!

Project management is, like medicine, a situational non-exact science. While GenAI will transform project management, it is just a tool. Project manager soft skills, IQ, EQ, and ability to comprehend vague situations and risks and hence take decisions, will not be replaced by GenAI.
Project manager is like a physician… He will use all available tools to understand the situation, but the final treatment plan is an ultimate responsibility of the physician himself not the tools.

Hi, Sarah. Hello PMI Community! I'm Tri Le, and I work as a project manager for an IT company in Vietnam.
In my view, I think that implementing timely engineering technology can improve project management, save time, and provide additional resources and tools for reference.
As a result, I believe this contributes to the PM's overall work performance.
Best regards,

I do not see that the wide adoption of prompt engineering will commoditize project management skills, at least at this stage of the GenAI technology. THis can be an exptremely helpful tool, but the project manager expertise will still be required to determine where AI contributions are the most relevant, and to have a critical eye on the generated answers. Additionally and until it is possible to feed the full project data in the prompts, the AI will only have access to only partial project information, and for that reason can only produce useful, but imperfect answers.
