Hi PMI Community! I’m Sarah Philbrick, and I work as a Product Manager at PMI with a focus on our learning offerings. As we go on this skill-building journey together, I’m excited to engage in meaningful conversations, explore trending topics, and learn from each other.

Reflecting on one such topic, GenAI and prompt engineering, I am interested to hear your perspective on commoditization vs. differentiation.

Will the widespread adoption of prompt engineering commoditize project management skills, or can it help PMs differentiate themselves and command higher value?

I think this will help PMs across the board. It will help us become more efficient and add more value to what each of us contribute to our respective companies.

I think this kind of tools would allow Project managers and professionals in general to save time in preparing the deliverables they need. Knowing that those outcomes need to be reviewed to confirm the accuracy of it, I don't see this kind of tools removing a PM from the equation (at least, not in an efficient way).

AI prompt engineering must demonstrate its value beyond mere time savings by significantly enhancing the success rates of projects both collectively and within specific industries. As Napoleon wisely noted, “dress me slow because I am in a hurry,” emphasizing the importance of thorough preparation. We anticipate that AI prompt engineering will not follow this path of potential failure but will instead enable us to accelerate project timelines while maintaining high standards of quality, knowledge, accuracy in deliverables, and the generation of expected value.

GenAI assists us by reducing the time we spend on "busy" work allowing us to invest our time on "value-add" work... talking with customers, managing time, resources and budget.

The adoption of prompt engineering and LLMs can help us as Project Managers to be more efficient and productive. For example, we can allow us to spend time performing tasks that Gen AI can handle, and we only need to check if the response is correct and provide feedback to the AI for its development. We can take advantage of this time to connect with our team, learn new things, or find new business opportunities.

With the new generation of generative AI portfolio/program/project manager and business analyst role "are dead" at least in the way they were originally defined. I think a good source to understand that are the two courses on generative AI delivered for free by the PMI, mainly if you see the 3 layer model.
I believe Generated AI and Prompt Engineering will help Project Managers to be more effective in deliverying projects on time and adding business value.

I believe that it can differentiate PM's, but unsure if that is going to immediately impact upon them commanding higher value. I'm curious to see AI's impact upon the upcoming releases of PMBOK education edition releases.

Then answer may be both. I think the answer will morph over time. The direction could be largely dependent upon the organization's understanding of project management. Like many tools, the value lies in the hands of the user. It takes skill to use the tool to its maximum potential. That said, being adept at using AI tools will help (at least some) PMs differentiate themselves in the marketplace.

Overall, the leveraging the use of LLMs to help augment some of the administration work that is typical of a Project Manager's duties is actually a good thing. This effectively will free up the capacity of the PM to focus on the relationships between the project stakeholders and managing to the milestones. Creating reusable prompts will further streamline tasks for future projects. If PMs can focus their gained capacity on managing the nuances of projects, it will increase their impact to said project and therefore command a higher value for their services.
