Hi PMI Community! I’m Sarah Philbrick, and I work as a Product Manager at PMI with a focus on our learning offerings. As we go on this skill-building journey together, I’m excited to engage in meaningful conversations, explore trending topics, and learn from each other.

Reflecting on one such topic, GenAI and prompt engineering, I am interested to hear your perspective on commoditization vs. differentiation.

Will the widespread adoption of prompt engineering commoditize project management skills, or can it help PMs differentiate themselves and command higher value?

AI enhances the opportunities to show our knowledge and abilities to adapt, while outperforming those who lack the interest and commitment to continue developing and embracing the latest technology to increase their efficiency and performance.

This trend raises important questions about the future of project management in a rapidly evolving technological landscape. Many people have wondered whether AI will replace project managers. It's clear that PMs need to adapt and learn how to use and leverage AI to stay relevant and effective in their roles.
Who would have imagined 20 years ago that vehicles would not need drivers? We may not be there yet, but we will be soon.
The concern is genuine but the AI landscape needs more governance to streamline what is required. In this context I do not completely feel that AI will take over the job role of a PM rather it will help to enhance efficiency and delivery time. Mind you, it is ever evolving and requires control.

The adoption of prompt engineering could commoditize some basic PM tasks such as scheduling, reporting, refinement and data gathering through automation. However, I see it as an opportunity for PMs to differentiate ourselves by focusing on higher-value skills. This includes strategic thinking, human-centered leadership, and leveraging AI-powered insights to make more complex, data-driven decisions. By using AI to enhance efficiency and manage larger, more innovative projects, we can command higher value. Combining traditional PM skills with AI literacy and customization, we are positioned as indispensable leaders, ensuring we stay ahead in an increasingly automated environment.

Prompt engineering and AI advancements in project management have the potential to both commoditize and differentiate project management skills. While some routine aspects of project management may become more standardized and automated, there will be increasing value in skills that complement and leverage these technologies.

Project managers who excel in strategic decision-making, soft skills, customization, and innovative use of AI tools will be able to command higher value and stand out in a changing landscape.

The adoption of prompt engineering in project management is not likely to commoditize but instead, it offers a unique opportunity for project managers to enhance their skills, improve efficiency, and deliver greater value. By leveraging AI and prompt engineering, project managers can differentiate themselves in the marketplace, command higher value, and drive more successful project outcomes.

Yes. It WILL commoditize CURRENT PM skills.

and YES it can help PMs differentiate themselves and command higher value if they work out how to extract better cost, schedule and quality by using it.
