Will the widespread adoption of prompt engineering commoditize project management skills, or can it help PMs differentiate themselves and command higher value?

Hi PMI Community! I’m Sarah Philbrick, and I work as a Product Manager at PMI with a focus on our learning offerings. As we go on this skill-building journey together, I’m excited to engage in meaningful conversations, explore trending topics, and learn from each other.
Reflecting on one such topic, GenAI and prompt engineering, I am interested to hear your perspective on commoditization vs. differentiation.

It will free up PM capacity engaged in mundane, repetitive tasks & enable them to innovate more. AI is definitely a value-add towards making the workforce future-oriented. Saving Changes...

The AI should not make PM's settle in their own confort zone. It takes a technical knowledge to define if the information is taken in consideration or not. A Project Manager who has the skills to use the best prompts using these Generative AI programs can make decisions faster and with more precision, reducins their learning curve for some topics, but those who rely on it as a source of knowledge can make bad decisions if they don't validate it's content. AI relies on machine learning which translates to the integrity, accuracy and completeness of the training data. AI will suffer greatly from garbage in and will require human moderation.
I think prompt engineering can help to improve project manager's skills. Saving Changes...

While prompt engineering may streamline certain aspects of project management, skilled project managers who combine technical knowledge, soft skills, and strategic thinking could be continue to command higher value.
I agree with this observation and the fact that the human aspect cannot be replaced. While AI will definitely help to increase the productivity and efficiency of a PM, the human aspect is required to achieve successful implementation and results. For example: giving the same requirements outline to build a product to two different PMs will result in two different products. The humans make the difference and will always be required! The widespread adoption of prompt engineering may commoditize routine project management tasks like scheduling, reporting, and communication, as AI is good in automating these functions. However, it is highly important to actually understand what you want as a result, which comes with experience and domain knowledge. The advent of AI also offers a major opportunity for differentiation. Skilled project managers who leverage AI can focus more on strategic decision making, stakeholder management, and other activities related to actionable ideas based on insights. Mastering prompt engineering allows managers to optimize team productivity. Saving Changes...
I believe that over time, rapid engineering will become a commodity, as technology is also improving day by day and becoming more accessible to everyone. Saving Changes...

Gen AI will completely change project management. This particularly affects the way project managers work. In my current job, a lot of time is spent creating presentations and documentation, leaving little time for the team. I expect this ratio to be reversed, resulting in significantly better project results overall. Saving Changes...
