Hi PMI Community! I’m Sarah Philbrick, and I work as a Product Manager at PMI with a focus on our learning offerings. As we go on this skill-building journey together, I’m excited to engage in meaningful conversations, explore trending topics, and learn from each other.

Reflecting on one such topic, GenAI and prompt engineering, I am interested to hear your perspective on commoditization vs. differentiation.

Will the widespread adoption of prompt engineering commoditize project management skills, or can it help PMs differentiate themselves and command higher value?

The adoption of prompt engineering will give value in project management to those who have a good capacity to adapt in this disruptive world.
Project management is a discipline that has evolved significantly, adopting agile methodologies and hybrid approaches. therefore, I believe that the ability to incorporate AI and prompt engineering will allow PMs to maintain their validity and differentiation.

In a small business context where there are limited resources with deep project management expertise, AI can supplement the available skilled resources helping the make more effective decisions, deliver better results for the business and clients.

Great question! I believe prompt engineering and Generative AI (GenAI) have the potential to both commoditize and differentiate project management skills, depending on how PMs leverage these tools.

Commoditization: As more organizations adopt AI-driven tools, certain project management tasks (like reporting, data analysis, or risk prediction) could become automated. This might make some operational aspects of PM work feel more standardized, as these tools become widely available and accessible.

Differentiation: On the flip side, AI tools can free up project managers to focus on higher-value tasks like strategic decision-making, stakeholder engagement, and creative problem-solving. PMs who understand how to use AI to optimize workflows, customize AI-driven insights, and align them with business strategy can position themselves as innovators. This can help them stand out and command higher value in their roles.

In essence, those who adapt, learn how to harness the power of AI effectively, and focus on leadership and strategic contributions will likely find themselves differentiating in a rapidly evolving space.

I actually think AI and prompt engineering will in many ways make being a PM harder than ever. PMs will still need to understand all the concepts of good PM, but also will have another layer on top of that of knowing when to use, and not use, AI to assist them.

Generative Ai will actually help Project Managers in achieving their respective Project tasks, however, it has to be use with caution. It should play a complementary role and not substitute for professional practice.

Just as accountants in the past had a paper ledger to keep track of credits and debits on a balance sheet and then, low and behold, the IBM PC came about and VisiCalc was born...then Lotus 1,2,3...there are probably few accountants that just use paper. AI is another tool for us project managers to become more efficient at what we do. We have the experience and as long as we ask well formated questions to the AI we use, and fact check it, it's another great tool in our toolbox.

where there is dynamism and we are expecting more creative disruptions, commoditization due to prompt engineering may not be feasible. Several years ago, GenAI and prompt engineering were futuristic. However, this is the future we talked about
There will always be a future that intimidates the present and proactive project managers will always seek to add value through innovation.

Those dedicated to the use of GenAI and the continuous improvement of their prompt engineering skills will absolutely distance themselves from peers/competitors. Translation of their commitment and skill into recognition/rewards will likely take much longer as companies/clients struggle with measuring them and their value to the organization.
