Will the widespread adoption of prompt engineering commoditize project management skills, or can it help PMs differentiate themselves and command higher value?

Hi PMI Community! I’m Sarah Philbrick, and I work as a Product Manager at PMI with a focus on our learning offerings. As we go on this skill-building journey together, I’m excited to engage in meaningful conversations, explore trending topics, and learn from each other.
Reflecting on one such topic, GenAI and prompt engineering, I am interested to hear your perspective on commoditization vs. differentiation.
Will the widespread adoption of prompt engineering commoditize project management skills, or can it help PMs differentiate themselves and command higher value?
I think GenAI is potentially dangerous as long as the information sources are not completely verified. Saving Changes...

in my opinion, this will help to make the work faster and better, as if you had a highly qualified personal assistant, but since different people cannot make demands on the same task in exactly the same way, the result will also be different Saving Changes...

I do believe that is is a place for the integration of AL technology while the PM duties and functions continued to be practiced. The AI tools can be used to improve a PM efficiencies and effectiveness. Saving Changes...
It will totally help PMs differentiate themselves and command higher value. The constant change in all the environment worldwide need that a good PM adopt the new good technologies. Learning and then implementing where it is possible with the corresponding care. Saving Changes...

Will GEN AI replace people? I doubt it, at least not for the time being; however, learning to use it in the PM context (including PgM, PfM, etc.) will allow the management of projects to reduce a lot of the "wasted" time in generating documentation and ensure a certain amount of compliance with development and content rules and regulations. Perhaps will even support the development of documentation that is more user-friendly and more automated. Many of the main documents, such as WBS, Timelines, and the rest of the requirements, take an incredible amount of time from the PM, and other Project Team members, and considering that they are iterative, then even longer... I see Gen AI supporting the improvement and modification of this documents, and even turning them into valuable tools, which are used to guide the delivery project in a real way, and not simply as a guideline that still needs to be interpreted, and executed, but by providing the PM with a constant source of requirements that need to be completed. It is in essence a way of automating the brain of the PM, specially with Prompt engineering being as significant as it is. Saving Changes...
Gen AI is an opportunity for project managers to augment their knowledge and effectiveness in managing projects. It is also an opportunity to elevate project managers expertise and way of working, as we are gearing up to take up new upcoming challengies in different areas, Energy (climate change, sustainability...), Healthcare, Construction, AI and so on. I believe, we are in a disruption moment for projecy management rol. I can see the Gen AI as a great help to improve our work and adapt those different tools in order to provide the best solution in different situations, issues or problems that happen in the project life cycle.
We must learn, growth and keep this way in order to improve our profession Saving Changes...

I think there will be some commoditization of project management skills, but not all. I am excited to truly begin using AI to help with some of my more mundane and administrative tasks in order to focus more on strategic thinking and problem-solving. Project Managers who don't seek to learn more about AI and learn how to leverage it are at risk of losing a competitive advantage in the employment market. Saving Changes...

A good project manager who knows how to use the Gen AI and prompt engineering can definitely revolutionize the way the projects are being handled. Its an additional skill that every project manger must possess to be relevant in the current field. While we could involve Gen AI and prompt engineering for all project tasks however the decision making, judgement, human relationships and business oversight is still with the project manager to manage the project effectively. It comes down to "Doing the right things" vs "Doing things right" while latter of the same can be easily accomplished using AI. Let me know your thoughts! Saving Changes...
