Will the widespread adoption of prompt engineering commoditize project management skills, or can it help PMs differentiate themselves and command higher value?

Hi PMI Community! I’m Sarah Philbrick, and I work as a Product Manager at PMI with a focus on our learning offerings. As we go on this skill-building journey together, I’m excited to engage in meaningful conversations, explore trending topics, and learn from each other.
Reflecting on one such topic, GenAI and prompt engineering, I am interested to hear your perspective on commoditization vs. differentiation.
Will the widespread adoption of prompt engineering commoditize project management skills, or can it help PMs differentiate themselves and command higher value?
Hi everyone,
I'm Miquel, I think AI is being considered as a substitute for the PM or even as a tool, in my opinion we should think of AI as an experienced assistant, since AI capabilities will improve every day. I don't use it, but I think the potential is huge and it will make the work of the entire project team easier, not just for the PM.
I'm taking this course to learn more about Pronpt Engineering and GenAI. The future of AI is hopeful, but what is certain is that the role of the PM/PgrM has to evolve according to the new tools and aids that are being developed, we cannot think in terms of the 20th century with 21st century technology. Both scenarios are very plausible.
Given how easily accessible LLMs are, anyone with less experience can use them to project manage small scale, low risk projects. At the same time I think it is imperative that professional PMs should be early adopters of such technology, to make sure we are up to speed with modern trends and to make our work faster, adaptable and enhanced by everything technology has to offer. Using AI is definitely a differentiator but it is not a solver of all problems - knowledge, adaptability and experience are key. Saving Changes...
Generative AI, like all technology, will allow one person to do more. It does not take the place of the role but enhances the capabilities that a single person or team can wield. Farmers are not gone, through technology and equipment, a small team can do more. Generative AI is a new technology and tool that will do the same. That may mean fewer and smaller teams will be necessary to accomplish what we do now, but entirely new opportunities will be created as well that will accomplish so much more. Saving Changes...
I think that LLS can help to Project Managing Team to structure project documentation and follow up the project advance, but is still far from replace the human factor, all the outcoming must be verified to asure efectiveness and right compatibility with the expected result.
In adition as I see is very goog generating information on generic project kinds as construction or software, but is still week in very techical and specialyzed topics like steel shop componets or pipe mills process for example.
even that, this is the future, and more early we understand how to use it and get advantage of this will made us more competitive project managers. Saving Changes...
i am really excited to use pmi infinity to automate the PM tasks Saving Changes...

While the technology has advanced to the point that we can generate content using LLMs, it is up to the project manager on how to leverage it so as to gain maximum advantage in his/her day-to-day activities. We may resort to GenAI tools to seek help in documentation, creating artifacts, compilation of reports, getting ideas etc, however overall project management is a soft skill that requires knowledge, prudence and experience. With the adoption of prompt engineering different techniques we will get very precise, analytical and comprehensive output, now using the Human intelligence we can only decide, negotiate, Ad hoc changes as per requirement.
So, yes with all the inputs it will provide a wider range that will help any Project Manager to decide and gives a path forward eventually helping to get higher values and Better decision Maker.

The Impact of Prompt Engineering on Project Management
Prompt engineering – the art of crafting effective prompts for large language models (LLMs) – is rapidly evolving. As its applications expand, it's natural to ponder its influence on traditional roles like project management.
Potential Commoditization
Task Automation: LLMs can handle routine tasks, like generating project plans, risk assessments, or status reports. This could potentially commoditize these aspects of PM work.
Accessibility: With the democratization of AI tools, more individuals and organizations could access these capabilities, increasing competition.
Enhancing PM Value
Strategic Thinking: PMs can leverage LLMs to explore alternative scenarios, identify potential risks, and develop more innovative strategies.
Complex Problem Solving: LLMs can assist in analyzing complex data sets and identifying patterns that might be difficult for humans to discern.
Personalized Communication: LLMs can be used to tailor communication to specific stakeholders, improving engagement and outcomes.
Continuous Learning: PMs can use LLMs to stay updated on industry trends, best practices, and emerging technologies.
In conclusion, while prompt engineering has the potential to automate certain aspects of PM work, it also offers significant opportunities for PMs to differentiate themselves. By focusing on strategic thinking, complex problem-solving, and personalized communication, PMs can leverage LLMs to enhance their value and remain essential in the evolving project landscape.
With the new generation of generative AI portfolio/program/project manager and business analyst role "are dead" at least in the way they were originally defined. I think a good source to understand that are the two courses on generative AI delivered for free by the PMI, mainly if you see the 3 layer model.
I believe project managers are going to stay there. But, the one with AI skills can thrive than the ones without. Managers who can harness this machine genie can outsmart others who are lagging behind AI adoption. Saving Changes...

I believe the human aspect can never be replaced by LLMs, GenAI is just the next step in a series of technological advancements. We gladly embraced MS Office tools and other Gantt Chart generating softwares so I see this is a step ahead. It will make our jobs as PMs easier, and ore efficient, we are mainly cutting down processing time and we now have the opportunitiy to divert our resources to more intuitive thoughts like adaptation to change.
