Will the widespread adoption of prompt engineering commoditize project management skills, or can it help PMs differentiate themselves and command higher value?

Hi PMI Community! I’m Sarah Philbrick, and I work as a Product Manager at PMI with a focus on our learning offerings. As we go on this skill-building journey together, I’m excited to engage in meaningful conversations, explore trending topics, and learn from each other.
Reflecting on one such topic, GenAI and prompt engineering, I am interested to hear your perspective on commoditization vs. differentiation.
Will the widespread adoption of prompt engineering commoditize project management skills, or can it help PMs differentiate themselves and command higher value?
While prompt engineering may streamline certain aspects of project management, skilled project managers who combine technical knowledge, soft skills, and strategic thinking could be continue to command higher value.
Concept, context for real time approach to fix a human practical and simultaneous mistake done based on ideology and provide a corresponding redress cannot be done by AI. I wrote a book called Real Time Monitoring and Evaluation in Traditional Project Management in Rural Communities in Africa. It described how and why project fail. Saving Changes...

I do not think that one day the human factor will be dispensed with in project management. Saving Changes...
Prompt engineering provides a clue to managing complex projects with less anxiety, however, as much as AI tools will increase the efficiency of project management, adoption and adaptation by Managers demand determination, willingness to accept change and all that it entails (i.e learning and capacity building).
I am convinced this is the way to go and sure many more to come in Tech world. Saving Changes...
I believe that while prompt engineering and GenAI may streamline certain aspects of project management, they can also offer an incredible opportunity for differentiation rather than commoditization. Here's why:
Efficiency vs. Strategy: While AI can automate tasks and enhance decision-making, project management involves a level of human nuance, creativity, and leadership that AI can’t replace. PMs who leverage AI to enhance efficiency can focus more on strategic thinking, stakeholder management, and innovation—areas where human skills still hold significant value.
Enhanced Data-Driven Decisions: Prompt engineering can help PMs access valuable insights quickly, allowing them to make faster and more data-driven decisions. Those who master this technology will stand out by translating AI insights into actionable strategies.
Focus on Higher-Level Skills: By automating routine tasks, PMs can focus on developing more critical skills like problem-solving, conflict resolution, and team leadership. This shift allows for greater emphasis on personal branding and higher-value contributions.
Adapting to Change: PMs who embrace prompt engineering and AI as tools for innovation will differentiate themselves as forward-thinking leaders in the industry, able to navigate the evolving landscape with confidence and agility.
In short, prompt engineering is a tool that, when used wisely, can allow PMs to differentiate themselves by mastering technology while focusing on strategic value. It’s about finding the right balance between tech adoption and human-centered leadership.
I have been using a few gen AI tools, specifically chatbots, data analytics tools to simplify my work in day-to-day PM role. They work great for prompts like summarization, comparison and some level of data mining, but there are many use case scenarios where one can't totally rely on the AI tool to get the final solution. For e.g. I tried mining a spreadsheet and convert certain texts into shorter characters required to visually represent my data into a line/bar chart. While the chatbot wasn't able to give me the final graph, it saved me several minutes in getting an excel formula with examples, that I was able to use to convert the big spreadsheet into more sensical data table, and moreover it gave me steps to quickly create the line chart that I eventually wanted. All that within 10min.
So, I see potential in increasing productivity!
Hi! Its an importat tool that if we use it with ethic and responsabilty It could help in all the projects cycles. Saving Changes...
With the new generation of generative AI portfolio/program/project manager and business analyst role "are dead" at least in the way they were originally defined. I think a good source to understand that are the two courses on generative AI delivered for free by the PMI, mainly if you see the 3 layer model.
If generative AI responses are well validated and used ethically by a project manager, it can help PMs differentiate themselves and command vast values together with their skill sets. Saving Changes...

Hi everyone ! I am glad to see such a thriving PM community and be able to read so many insightful comments and inputs. I will try here to bring my 2 cents to the current discussion flow:
I fulla agree with the statement that “Prompt Engineering has the potential to both commoditize and enhance project management (PM) skills,” . There are already multiple very good inputs, arguments provided in this discussion thread, thus I will not repeat them. However, some inputs / thoughts on the followings:
New 'challenging' areas:
- Basic PM Skills normalization: the basic PMs skills needed for routine PM tasks, project planning, project documentation management ..etc, will become ‘commodities’ and /or will be transferred to the Client side.
- PM Proficiency Entry Level: this requirements and min. level will raise, for in the future, the ability to ‘understand’ and ‘use’ some standard project management techniques will not be a differentiation anymore.
- Business / Client team empowerment with the ability to ‘drive and deliver’ projects with low level complexity, limited scope and duration. Here, the reliance on/ needs of a dedicated PM will decrease.
- PMO Service Providers: due to the PM tasks automation and increased productivity, the demand for basics ‘PMO Services’ will significantly decrease.
Fortunately, there are many "Opportunities Areas":
- PM Consulting Role Extension with the ‘AI Technology’ Change Enabler & Management' role
- “PMO as a Service” Model deployment
- “PM Maturity Level Assessment & Improvment” initiatives opportunities
- BPM – Business Process Management & Automation
- OPEX – Operational Excellence & Productivy increase.
- etc - TBD for more opportunities will be created as GenAI / LLMs will be deployed and start to be integrated / leverage in various industries and accross different Business / Clients segment. Saving Changes...

Prompt engineering will commoditize certain aspects of project management, particularly administrative tasks, but it won’t commoditize the core leadership and strategic decision-making skills that define exceptional PMs. Those who embrace AI and prompt engineering as tools to enhance their capabilities—rather than seeing them as threats—can differentiate themselves and command higher value in the marketplace. Adoption of prompt engineering is about extracting better answers from the AI.This could be compared to any other tool that was invented to improve, support or ease our work. Mastering the way to interact with the AI will not commoditize but dfferentiate the deliverables or the peformances of the better skilled professionals. Saving Changes...
