Hi PMI Community! I’m Sarah Philbrick, and I work as a Product Manager at PMI with a focus on our learning offerings. As we go on this skill-building journey together, I’m excited to engage in meaningful conversations, explore trending topics, and learn from each other.

Reflecting on one such topic, GenAI and prompt engineering, I am interested to hear your perspective on commoditization vs. differentiation.

Will the widespread adoption of prompt engineering commoditize project management skills, or can it help PMs differentiate themselves and command higher value?

I think the use of GenAI will be another tool in the PM toolbox, but will not replace the human factor. Project Management is about so much more than generating plans and deliverables. People need a comfort level with those artifacts and knowledge of the underpinnings driving them to be able to adapt as things change. And also, let's not forget about the important interpersonal and communication skills required to successfully bring about change and complete a project!

With the new generation of generative AI portfolio/program/project manager and business analyst role "are dead" at least in the way they were originally defined. I think a good source to understand that are the two courses on generative AI delivered for free by the PMI, mainly if you see the 3 layer model.
Gen AI has become an absolute essential for Project Managers in this day and age. I am finding the free courses on PMI very helpful!

I agree with the differentiation perspective that skilled PMs can leverage prompt engineering to increase their productivity and take on more strategic work, focusing on high-value activities such as stakeholder management, complex problem-solving, and driving innovation. My recommendation would be to master AI tools for routine tasks and ideation, while being especially sensitive to data privacy and responsible use.

Prompt engineering should be utilized by PM's to speed up artifact creation although with proper validation. PM's will still have the advantage when it comes to regards to soft and leadership skills combined with technical knowlege.

AI is becoming essential in such a changing world that we cannot assimilate the large volumes of information that are generated every minute, our job will be to focus on more strategic issues and human relations.

In my humble opinion AI currently is more like an agent that can be used to do tasks for you by using the right prompt which is great for cutting time down and focusing on the important tasks ... next area is going to be extremely looking for creative PM's who can find solution for problems that wasn't solved by the AI yet while AI is busy solving old problems and repetitive tasks

Yes it does, learning and knowing Prompt engineering enables one to efficiently use the Generative AI tools. For example using right words to get the desired output and then making adjustments to meet final requirement. With Generative AI it is faster and better and with the final touch of validation completes the task. And note that this validation can also be done by Generative AI and Automation.

I do use AI chatbots and prompts to improve productivity in my day to day activities. It has been a great tool to summarize meetings, build meaningful content for presentations and analyze the reports.

Hello, Dear community.

While there is a risk of commoditization in more routine PM tasks due to the adoption of AI and prompt engineering, project managers who strategically use these tools to enhance their unique human skills—leadership, critical thinking, innovation—will differentiate themselves. They will not only maintain but increase their value in a landscape increasingly shaped by AI.

Best regards.

I believe the adoption of AI will greatly support PM methodology if used correctly. I think to ensure it's used correctly, PMs and their teams need to be familiar on proper prompt engineering, how to vet the information AI curates, and still working to creatively make the information generated their own.
