Hi PMI Community! I’m Sarah Philbrick, and I work as a Product Manager at PMI with a focus on our learning offerings. As we go on this skill-building journey together, I’m excited to engage in meaningful conversations, explore trending topics, and learn from each other.
Reflecting on one such topic, GenAI and prompt engineering, I am interested to hear your perspective on commoditization vs. differentiation.
Will the widespread adoption of prompt engineering commoditize project management skills, or can it help PMs differentiate themselves and command higher value?
Hi everyone! I belive that GenAI helps us in order to simplify our rutine activities in order to be able to focus on the matters that really need our attention and approximation. It's also true that this technology shows to everyone when a PM brings value into the projects or doesn't. It depends in how are we applying this GenAI; a big power came with a big resposiblity. It will do both. A population of people (PMs) will be subject to the effects of supply and demand, with regards to their knowledge, skills, and certifications, and will seek additional means to command higher value. Saving Changes...
The widespread adoption of prompt engineering, especially with the rise of AI-driven tools, has the potential to influence project management in two key ways: commoditizing certain skills while also helping project managers differentiate themselves and command higher value. As AI tools become more capable of handling routine tasks—such as generating reports, scheduling, task management, and even basic stakeholder communications—some traditional project management responsibilities could become commoditized and entry-level PM skills might become less differentiated, reducing the demand for basic project management tasks in isolation. However, prompt engineering can also empower project managers to enhance their role in strategic decision-making, risk management, and complex stakeholder alignment by using it to gather insights faster, enabling more data-driven decision-making and scenario planning. The widespread adoption of prompt engineering in project management presents both commoditization risks and differentiation opportunities. While automation and standardization may commoditize some project management skills, experienced project managers can differentiate themselves by focusing on high-level strategy, creativity, problem-solving, emotional intelligence, and leadership.
By embracing AI-powered project management, they can enhance productivity, improve decision-making, and increase stakeholder value.
And, To command higher value, project managers should develop complementary skills such as business acumen, technical expertise, and data-driven decision-making. Ultimately, harmonizing human expertise with AI capabilities will redefine the project management landscape, enabling professionals to unlock new opportunities, drive innovation, and deliver exceptional results. Thank you Sarah. I think the prompt engineering will not commoditize project management skills. However, it will help PMs differentiate themselves and command higher value. PMs with no clue of Prompt Engineering techniques will definitely be left behind or replaced by those who does. Saving Changes...

With the widespread adoption of prompt engineering, I believe it can enable non-project managers to tackle small projects but can also empower project managers to focus on tasks that AI cannot complete at this time. Project Managers will need to become adaptive and use AI to make them more efficient. Saving Changes...

Ultimately, I feel that the advent of AI / ML will speed delivery and accuracy of delivery, as experts embrace the capability. The time consuming job of hand-cranking the deliverables is the commoditization; however, the experience and very human insights we bring will elevate our critical positions across all verticals and industries. As a project manager, I always look for the relevant information to help me with the decision making. Collecting and refining the information can be tedious and non-productive at times especially in projects with time constraints. Prompt engineering can definitely be a useful tool in this aspect, allowing managers to generate more value and efficiency, while focusing their knowledge and skills on refining the output and focus more on various critical aspects. This can turn out to be a differentiating factor if used smartly and ethically. Saving Changes...
